Guarda, purtroppo non è così secondo me.

If Argentina wins the world cup, the collective groan across the globe will increase the carbon dioxide so much that the planet temperature will go up 1C.
I am increasingly leaning away from calling "AI" generated stuff "slop" towards calling it "corrosion". Because that's what it does. To our information landscape. To the quality of artifacts around us. To our social connections. To our mental health. To our cognitive abilities.
Who else is noticing AI-generated illustrations in the real world appearing at new hairdressers, ice-cream parlors, kebap shops, butcheries, everywhere?
Sure, there's no reason why AI slop should be confined to the online world. But as long as I will still be able to distinguish AI signs from non-AI signs, I will consider these AI stores/restaurants as inferior quality. Is that wrong?
@mellifluousbox There's a very good local ice cream company near me that recently covered an entire wall at their shop with AI slopvertising for a new product range. It put me right off them.
I'm about halfway through my (generously estimated?) life expectancy and I just realised the tea brand "Twinings" is not pronounced "Twinnings".
I just heard the geese complaining outside. Not enough to make me think "foxes!" but enough to make me think they regret their choice to not go into their enclosure at sunset.
I wonder if this means they'll go into the enclosure tomorrow night?
@emmadavidson you clearly don’t value your geese.

On 10 March 2021, I had only just fallen asleep when my phone started buzzing. Then another notification, and another. In a matter of minutes, 142 of my servers went up in the clouds. And not the cloud-computing kind.
Most of them were physically going up in a column of smoke in Strasbourg.
My wife looked at me and asked if I wanted a coffee. I nodded. It was going to be a very long day.
At EuroBSDCon 2026, I won't be giving a theoretical lecture on high availability. Instead, I’m going to tell the raw story of that night: the emergency recovery, the architectural choices that actually saved us, and the ones that crumbled under pressure (because we rarely talk about what fails).
Most of all, I’ll explain why that night changed my perspective, and why I’ve come to see BSD systems not just as operating systems, but as essential, practical tools for building simpler, more resilient infrastructure.
The official schedule is now live. If you want to hear a real-world post-mortem, join me on Saturday, 12 Sept at 11:15 (Room D.0.02).

Today will be slightly less hot, but a bit more smokey. A heat advisory is in effect for Metro Philadelphia. Isolated severe storms are possible late today from metro Philly south.
@mahadevank - Niches of niches? Looking for a "what do we have left" pushed me to strongly consider various BSD implementations but they have a problem with AI contributions too (at a far less scale but seemingly proportionate to their dev base).
I started to lose hope, lol.
But there is enough pushback that maybe something meaningful can happen within Linux (and *BSD for that matter) groups.
We'll see.
But yeah, AI slop has permeated everything. But we're also in an era where it is being heavily pushes everywhere with heavy heavy heavy subsidies (both govt and corpo). When those subsidies subside, we'll see where we sit for the long term.
@tinker @mahadevank We'll see. When it becomes infeasibly expensive to use LLMs & the AI bubble bursts there will be some thinkimh again. Not much help to those of us who have lost our jobs through "AI" fomo but hope for the best😉

Do you know an EU nature project close to where you live? Share in the comments!
@EUCommission We have a big project going on here, renaturating the local rivers and lakes along Aller, Ohre and Ise, which is at least co-financed by the EU, but also the state of lower saxony, smaller actors in the KLARA alliance and Volkswagen AG.
It also has the side effect of my parents now watching beavers build their projects in the river next to their garden.
