There are the albums you hear and enjoy, then there are the albums that stick with you over the years. Belly Bones, recorded in 2004 by Rock Jack, is one such album for me.

In addition to original tunes like “Darth Vader Is Mean” and “Toilet Master” (Did I mention the vocalist was 3 1/2 years old at the time?), their cover of Van Halen’s “Somebody Get Me A Doctor” is easily my favorite version of the song.

Joe Bob sez check it out.

The Pre-Order for my new album, "Nowhere," is live now!

The pre-order features "Back Away," and a new track, "Invisibella," which you can stream now!

This is a dark album, focusing heavily on my mental health while writing it. The full album launches on Sunday, July 13th, and all digital pre-orders will receive $10 off the vinyl release once it becomes available!

Please listen, enjoy, and share with your friends.

to What's The Frequency, Kenneth?

youtube.com/watch?v=2ZMUNyLmar

The big single off the 1994 R.E.M album Monster. I still don't really understand what this song is about, but it has a great use of delay on the fuzz guitar, and some great lyrics;

"You wore our expectations like an armored suit"

"A smile like the cartoon, tooth for a tooth
You said that irony was the shackles of youth"

In a weird way, What's The Frequency reminds me of Panic in the Shade by Hunters & Collectors. Which came out the same year and also has some great lyrics;

"You been livin' in a golden age
It was the last thing you expected
Ya took ya sanity for granted
Now it lies tragically neglected"

"Trying to erase the silence
Ever since your rhythm got blown away
Crawlin' through the wreckage of your rendering room
To meet your hidden-half way"

Another band that listening to Pumpkinhead reminds me of, from the same era, is the Dead Flowers;

I bought their 1993 album Skin of a Stone on tape and later, the 1994 follow-up Sweetfish.

This was a weird, experimental time in Aotearoa music. Heavy guitar bands were pulling from a wide range of influences. Shihad, Head Like a Hole, The Bilge Festival, The 3Ds, Runt, Chug, and more, were making great hybrid albums and touring relentlessly.

#Listening to the classic Pumpkinhead single Nark (Rat on your neighbour). Here's a recording of the music video broadcast on music TV;

Like Hallelujah Picassos, these guys are mostly unsung but were a big presence in the Aotearoa music picture of the late 1980s and early 90s;
