AI is transforming the translation industry, reducing skilled roles to post-editing and risking the erasure of cultural nuance and interpretive expertise. This shift impacts livelihoods, language diversity, and the future of human interpretative skills.

Let's close out the week with a #geoweirdness thread.
This time we head back to Europe to consider the geographic oddities of the Czech Republic 🇨🇿

How would you even start at #1 if you're not already well known
Most of these accounts are either already well known (e.g. @rbreich ), or they're marketing channels for specific organisations, including things like newspapers. There are other variants, like bots that bridge RSS feeds so you can follow an RSS feed here, but there's no human directly there. I have a couple of these on feedsin.space (which, sadly, is now unmaintained). These will never reply, but I (and other people) can reply to the threads that they create.
@david_chisnall Oh yeah obviously those, but for normal people 3-to-2 makes a lot more sense. Maybe eventually ending up at 1 if they get really big.
I’ll try a pagan friend, thought I, since Christian kindness has proved but hollow courtesy.

@andrewnez this is a superb summary and overview!
I only wish the part about Terraform had some more words as I've never quite understood how it works as an environment, hence I can't grasp what's being said there.
But having tried to use Git submodules, that part rang a loud bell for me (and why I couldn't use them how I'd hoped).
- Automated spam is on the rise.
- Our digital communities are at risk from increasing regulation.
- AI bots are overwhelming service providers.
But we can prevail!

This season's first batch of saury fetched a record price of ¥700,000 per kilogram for some large fish at Tokyo's Toyosu wholesale market on Friday morning. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/07/10/japan/saury-record-high-price-toyosu/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #japan #saury #fishing #toyosu
Some folks may have heard about 31-year-old Kelsey Pfendler’s mastery of the sea. What I find most impressive is that she shattered the records she broke.
She rowed a boat from California to Hawaii ALONE. Her 2,400-mile journey took 44 days. In doing so she was the:
1. Youngest woman
2. First American woman
3. Fastest woman
4. Fastest human
She cut the previous women’s record (86 days) in half. She beat the previous men’s record (52 days) by almost a week.
What a beast. Go ahead and tell me men are physically superior to women. Kelsey straight up said “anything you can do, I can do better.”
Here’s a summary of a video diary she kept on route:

@markwyner What a badass!
Beyond Newtown on the Wine Street (translating place names is always fun)
More or less on time, but the joys of the Riedbahn await…
@jon you may enjoy this map of Germany 🇩🇪 if the place names were given English naming equivalents.
Wow, POSIX specifies that the type of the nanoseconds field in struct timespec must be long. Did they have a competition to pick the worst possible choice for that type? It's a value that must be able to hold a (maximum of 30-bit) value from 0 to 999,999,999. So they picked a signed type that is at least 32 bits, but sometimes larger.
@david_chisnall I wonder if they standardised it from implementations that decided to use -1 for "nanoseconds unsupported" or something like that.
