GOOD MORNING IT IS TIME FOR MATH ROCK
GOOD MORNING IT IS TIME FOR MATH ROCK
Aurora alerts on and off in the early hours so 'just in case' I went up Glastonbury Tor. The aurora wasn't to be but still nice being up there when it is so quiet.
@TheBreadmonkey @miffyhelen So is that and Mozambique (which has an AK47 on its flag) the only two states, or aspirant ones, that have guns on their flags, I wonder?
Today I learned that all those pointless collective nouns (a murder of crows, a parliament of owls, a pride of lions), which are only ever used in pub quizzes, were made up by one woman 500 years ago.

Which title should I use for my FOSDEM talk title? Feel free to reply with ideas for content. Or other titles. Bonus for puns.
I am currently in Newport, OR for a public hearing at city hall to listen to resident concerns on a potential ICE facility that officials are considering putting in town. The room is completely packed, the hallways are packed, there and tons of people protesting ICE outside and a packed rec center where the testimonies are being live streamed.
So far we have heard many testimonies from local residents including fishermen voicing their concerns about the possibility of an ICE detention center in town and concern about the removal of the coast guard helicopter.
DHS has said to be considering moving into a Newport Coast Guard air facility at the Newport Municipal airport, after they already displaced a Coast Guard helicopter some weeks ago at the property, concerning city officials who rely on that helicopter for safety along Oregon’s coastline.
This person was infected with COVID twice and recovered. A 3rd infection brought manageable long COVID symptoms, but they were still able to work. After a 4th infection a few months ago, they haven’t recovered at all — showing how repeated infections can cause severe, lasting damage.

💥GOOD NEWS from Denmark💥
Oil and gas permit REVOKED.
The Danish Energy Board ruled that consent for new fossil fuel production at Hejre field was unlawful, upholding a complaint by Greenpeace Nordic.
The full climate impact of oil extraction and burning - on people and planet - cannot be ignored!
Something that has always bothered me is how creativity gets completely left out the picture when it comes to research. For example, it doesn't even get mentioned in most formulations of the scientific method. But doing research requires you to first come up with a meaningful hypothesis to evaluate. That requires *immense* creativity, if your research is to have any impact or value. Leaving that creative process out is a very "draw the rest of the owl" sort of approach. I think this aspect should be emphasized by educators, not glossed over. Imagine if prospective researchers (or even students in general) were actually trained in how to be effectively creative, not just in how to do evidence based reasoning!
Glad to be able to pop by the Dundee UCU picket line as they were just getting set up this morning.
Staff are on strike in the cold & damp to say NO to compulsory redundancies. Management must engage with staff properly: co-design a recovery plan, do not impose cuts!

This story evokes the same sort of anxiety some people get when governments announce they're going to be using AI for things.
Quick reminder on the likely reason why Valve's New Steam Machine only supports #HDMI 2.0:
""At this time an open source HDMI 2.1 implementation is not possible without running afoul of the HDMI Forum requirements.""
This is what Alex Deucher, the maintainer of the amdgpu #kernel driver, said one and a half years ago here:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1417#note_2303163
And from the ticket it looks like the problem remains.
See also Alex's earlier comment from early 2021 in the ticket:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1417#note_830547
""HDMI 2.1 is not available on #Linux due to the HDMI Forum.""
And if you search on the internet for ‘how to crochet’, you will be inundated with video tutorials of people wanting to share their crafting skills. (This is something I made use of last year as learning to crochet was one of the things I wanted to do during 2024!)
With the increasing pressures of ‘normality’ and the cost of living crisis, it is easy to worry that our sense of community will disappear again. But it seems to me that the evidence suggests otherwise.

And I'll be at the Stop Job Cuts! rally with all the Dundee University trade unions at lunchtime today - staff and students must be included in how the recovery plan is designed!
During the early stages of the covid pandemic, a WhatsApp group was set up to connect people on the road where I live. Volunteers collected prescriptions for the elderly. They delivered shopping to people without transport. They said hello to neighbours who were alone.
This approach to support in communities was replicated across our towns and boroughs, across the nation and across the world.

I believe that kindness is powerful because it connects us all as human beings. My belief in that power means that I see it in all sorts of settings. One of those settings is within communities.

Great to see activity across the whole tree, from so many different people and groups. Thankyou!
Denmark and other EU governments still pursue #chatcontrol.
They still want to permanently legalize client-side scanning but postponed making it mandatory.
They also want to increase age-verification controls which risk to ruin what little is left of privacy in current digital spaces, taken hostage already by US corps.
Ourselves? We double down on providing the most private, reliable and fun messaging experience, with a growing federating #chatmail relay network across the globe.
