Got a good reminder today about how small things can make a big difference.
First lecture for a cohort of data science students.
I teach communications. We talked about how data doesn't speak for itself. It ust be contextualized... and it will get politicized. I said it would be used and abused in fights like women's rights, trans rights, minority rights... Data is never apolitical.
A student came up to me telling me how refreshing I was and was nearly in tears as they said no professor ever talked about trans rights before.
I think they felt seen for the first time at least at this institution. I certainly was not expecting such a response.
Small thing that went a long way
is, for example, "saturday makes three months since [event]" a normal construction in english or am i just copying spanish with that nowadays
@alyssa Normal in English I think.
@ajroach42 rad!
Any interest lately in a joyful revolution?
I'm trying my best to spread the word.
😅
@SrRochardBunson I'm still writing and doing outreach.
We gotta find some more money though.

Hi it’s me, the Attorney General. I’m stuck in jail and my bail has to be paid in iTunes gift cards.
I’m done with all Midsomer Murders I could find. Now I need a new show to watch. Hit me with your suggestions
@farah the entire Midsomer run? That must’ve taken ages!
After my partner marathoned that show she moved on to Death In Paradise, Vera, Father Brown, Grantchester, Shakespeare & Hathaway and The Brokenwood Mysteries. We both love Deadloch, and there’s the Judge Dee Mysteries if you don’t mind subtitles.
@gaditb there's no relay there right now (there could be, but I was particularly focused on "personal site" infra here), but HappyView can connect to any public one and can also fetch stuff directly from lists of repos. See: https://happyview.dev/
@essentialrandom Ahh.
- HappyView is the shared AppView for all of the sites (?)
- it's a known specific community so it could theoretically know the particular PDSs involved and just talk directly to them
- for larger communities it could use a public relay (or possibly a small private relay that's just relaying the PDSs of the community members)
?
(Obligatory "you don't need to answer all my silly questions and don't get anything out of it unless answering them is helpful to you". Sorry you can ignore this parenthetical I have social anxiety.)

Just remember that when you opt into allowing Apple to use your customer data to train AI, that means humans seeing and hearing details about your life that maybe you're not so comfortable sharing when you think of it that way.
@ifixcoinops @ddlyh @ajroach42
Yeah. Content-based, essentially. Which is the way to go, really.
I don't think targeting people really works as well as advertisers imagine. The mood the person is in would seem to matter just as much, IMHO. What they are currently reading seems like a better metric to me.
(Not even mentioning the ethical issues, which are large).
Comicad does basically the same thing, today, though, right? I looked them over, though I haven't advertised there (yet).
@TerryHancock @ifixcoinops @ddlyh
I am absolutely not interested in targeting ads. I'd rather them be seen by lots of different people who might like them based on the thing I choose to advertise on, you know?

I recently learned that you all really fucking love gnomes, so today's Low Quality Ad is for this Gnome Shroom Pin. Because who am I to deprive you of more gnomes? I wouldn't dare.

@mos_8502 I think we might have talked about something very close to this (or I dreamed it) last week, but I'd dedicate myself to contributing to random but to some degree minimally useful open source projects for prepaid block installments of whatever wage they make at the nearest Burger King to my location.
@mos_8502 (seems appropriate since I've worked at Burger Kings on both coasts for a total of like 3 or 4 years, while much younger of course... so far that is. I'm considering doing so again.)
Excellent free zine about overcoming voting barriers.
"Plenty of people hit a wall when they try to vote. Their name is missing from the voter list. The mail ballot never showed up. The signature on the envelope doesn't match. Someone at the door tells them they can't.
None of that happens by chance. This guide covers the barriers that come up most often, and what to do about each one. English and Spanish versions are the same zine."
From @monteiro and friends.
