We describe people who seem deeply disturbed by what they have seen, as "haunted by the past." But, if you could see it, couldn't you just as easily be haunted by the future?
S1 Episode 8: WordPress-ActivityPub with Matthias Pfefferle
@danbricklin We talked about it on episode 707 of @atpfm (starts at 36:13) https://atp.fm/707
Here's a link to jump right to that timestamp: https://overcast.fm/+BQnv4sMOPU/36:13
@siracusa Thanks! Great observations there.
I've never seen so much roadkill. Squirrels, rabbits, cats, even a baby deer. People here are just zooming their cars around with zero disregard for anyone else. One time I got so aggressively pushed of the road that it was hard not to see it as assault. I was able to avoid getting hit, but not without a crash (I'm ok).
Also, there's just cars everywhere, hard-paved driveways of little houses packed full of them. Makes you wonder how many people live there and how many cars they need.
@davidgerard @zzt its a miracle it’s happening at all
@cyberquixote @zzt amazing creatures

So we've made it to London, and we're still alive.
That being said, this was the most dangerous thing we've ever done. I cannot put in words what an absolute death trap it was at times.
Had a fantastic first day cycling through Flanders and the Netherlands. The night time ferry to England was super smooth and frankly a great way to travel.
But jeekers what absolutele carnage when we got to the UK. This is no country to cycle for anyone who values life or limbs.

Easy said: because people would rather embrace a movement that tells them that they are "momentarily poor because of xxxx but they could get richer somehow" rather than a movement that tells them that wealth must be shared equally.
People don't won't equality, actually right now people don't either want peace, how can you sell leftist idea?
I don't think the left does tell people that wealth must be shared equally - and if it did it would be a mistake.
The left in fact quite rightly emphasises the need for everybody's basic needs to be met - decent food, housing, clothing, education and health - and the need for economic and social security, and a future for their children - and that this is all achievable through fair tax and business regulation arrangements.
It's also true that more equal societies work better, and this should be the direction of travel - but there's no need to talk about, much less actually demand income/wealth equality in the foreseeable future.
I appreciate that we were cycling through east-england which is the kind of place balaclava-clad thugs roam the streets looking to inflict cruelty on vulnerable people.
And in that sense, I should probably not let it color my view on an entire country.
But things didn't get better as we got to London. Like, there were a few nice stretches sure, but I was shocked how terrible infrastructure is.
The way I feel now, if I never have to set foot on this island again, it will be too soon.
@jackielovescompchem32 @davidgerard I don't want operating systems anymore. computers and capitalism are a horrible combination.
@errant @zzt @davidgerard I'm literally in the woods cackling.
Designers, devs, open source advocates...this is a safe space!
What’s that one thing in your day-to-day workflow that makes you want to cry?
A painful handoff? Endless tasks?
Tell us your pain. Big, small, weirdly specific… we want to hear it🥲
Drop your tears below💧
@penpot penpot needs outline stroke and a real flatten/merge paths asap
Deepest, darkest rural France has better Internet than I've ever been able to buy, for any price, in SF 🤦
@slightlyoff Dental care probably more affordable as well.
As an antidote to the poison being thrown at the RNLI, I give you Bill Bryson:
“I had never really stopped to consider what an extraordinary thing the Royal National Lifeboat Institution is. Think about it. A troubled ship calls for help, and eight people — teachers, plumbers, the guy who runs the pub — drop everything and put to sea, whatever the weather, asking no questions, imperilling their own lives, to try to help strangers. Is there anything more brave and noble than that?”

"[A]rchaeologist Gary Feinman of the Field Museum in Chicago […] own research shows that autocratic governments are not inevitable when populations grow larger — a variety of societies around the globe throughout history have done things differently."
"On X, over the past 24 hours, photographs of two [RNLI] volunteers have been circulated with calls for these two men to “face justice.” To be “prosecuted” under a Restore government. Wishes of serious harm to them and their families. These men have, apparently, now been identified by name, and their details are currently spreading like wildfire.."

Different bits of @VisualInk work best with very different storage patterns so I finally bit the bullet and wrote my own data access layer with... #sql. Did I get object mapping for free? No, I had to hand craft some code there. Does the new version have less storage overhead, safer migrations, transactions across multiple operations, and enourmously higher performance? Yes, yes it does. The API you can build with a #fsharp computational expression to make carrying the connection pool and transaction info is pretty sweet.
Now I just need to deploy it to prod before teaching the next course using it (which is next week).
