The idea of "falling behind" by not going all-in on a specific technology is a marketing ploy used to create artificial urgency. It's not a fact. If you don't walk down one path you walk down another path. Both have unknown outcomes.
The claim of "falling behind" is the wording that should deter you from that path. In essence it is trying to force a future on you that is beneficial to a specific agent, often out of commercial interest. The claim does not invite you to reflect on your own, or your community’s, needs and wishes.
Artificial urgency is an enemy to independent, thoughtful progress.

@simon_brooke @Eceni that's fair, and I think none of us can predict what will or will not work. I think the best we can do is build an ecosystem of alternatives, some within and some outside the system, so that we create multiple different paths people can walk to get to a better future.

(It's not ruled out by the laws of physics, but … once you get over about 100Mt yield, you run into the law of diminishing returns: most of the energy goes straight up into space, and meanwhile the "useful" energy that a given nuke releases doesn't go up linearly with yield.

Agreed. My father was in USAF-SAC as a bombardier on a B-52. He showed me how saturation bombing a city with 100 nuclear warheads (each with one unit of fissionables) will inflict far more damage than one warhead with 100 units of fissionables.
The 100 unit bomb wastes most of its energy on the sky and the ground.
