The before and after images showing glaciers vanishing before our eyes
They are melting like never seen before, changing landscapes around the world beyond recognition.

Schweizer Gletscher 2025:
Wie die Eisriesen dahinschmelzen
#Glacier #Gletscher #Mountains #Bergen #ClimateChange #KlimaWandel
Planned for months, but only been away for a few days and new deep memories for a lifetime: Visiting, revisiting and documenting some personal bucket list places in Tyrol/Vinschgau, Sondrio (Valmalenco) and the Engadin, collecting references & research... Landscapes too large & overwhelming, mountain passes (and the human ingenuity to traverse them), vast valleys full of ancient history & struggles (with nature and each other), disappearing glaciers leaving behind incredible structures, waterfalls, canyons, exposed rocks with colorful minerals & textures, new ecosystems...
Getting this final shot of an "old friend" during sunset on our way back on the last evening, an absolute highlight...
Being able to seamlessly travel like that between four countries, more and more a privilege! So hard to understand the growing voices calling for stronger borders, nationalism, ignorant to the real systemic threats...

King Ortler (3905m)
No picture can do it justice... For scale, note the mountain hut (Berglhütte, at 2188m) in the bottom-left corner...

Glacier Timelines

Over the past 150 years, Switzerland’s glaciers have retreated up the alpine slopes, eaten away by warming temperatures induced by industrialization. But such changes can be difficult for people to visualize, so artist Fabian Oefner set out to make these changes more comprehensible. These photographs — showing the Rhone and Trift glaciers — are the result. Oefner took the glacial extent records dating back into the 1800s and programmed them into a drone. Lit by LED, the drone flew each year’s profile over the mountainside, with Oefner capturing the path through long-exposure photography. When all the paths are combined, viewers can see the glacier’s history written on its very slopes. The effect is, fittingly, ghost-like. We see a glimpse of the glacier as it was, laid over its current remains. (Image credit: F. Oefner; video credit: Google Arts and Culture)
