@kottke This reminds me of a term I used to use back when voice-over-IP was the latest buzz word.
I started using what I called IP-over-voice... rather than look it up on the computer myself, I'd call a friend and ask them to look it up for me. I'd tell them "I need help with IP-over-voice..." and then tell them what I needed them to do for me. Usually find an address or phone number or something.
It was a great way to stay connected with your friends. I should do more of that these days.

@ai6yr The system autodials vast numbers of lines. It doesn't invoke a human unless it feels a human answered (from answer cadence, etc.). If it feels a human is there, it tries to grab an available "agent" to do the call. Often there are far fewer agents, so the music plays until one is available.
