First time starting up an Android device in... maybe a decade? And: wow. Start up, no sim card in the device even, no login to anything, and ads right there first thing, in a device I've paid for. Very cool to thumb right and get a fullscreen ad for That Fucking Guy and some MAGA shill from Alberta looking right there like it's part of the stock install because I'm in Canada I guess.

@camille Endo missed the World Cup due to an injury, but he was on the bench yesterday. No explanation available why he wasn't played, and I'm not aware of any journalists asking useful questions. The closest to that was Daniel Sturridge who made some intelligent observations, but he's not a journalist.

and then i found this one paper by yao from 1977 https://sci-hub.st/storage/2024/2238/4fb85cfd514b7d31d7bc9f505e74b14b/yao1977.pdf which i think is describing how to manage pulling from a CSPRNG vs performing deterministic encryption of a message? i'm not quite sure yet.
there is definitely some legitimately interesting tradeoff being described here regarding the "parallel" (nondeterministic) and "serial" (deterministic) components of a process

@paul_ipv6 @onepict Yup. I've become fond of saying, "I like companies and I hate CEOs." There's really no problem with groups of workers establishing mutual trust and common infrastructure that allows them to work faster, better, and with a steady customer base. That's all just common sense. What you don't do, if you have any sense, is take this basic concept and then say "instead of worker democracy, let's put a big fat nepo-baby at the top whose reality-detached decisions can ruin all of our lives, and who slurps down most of the income that could have gone to worker pay, rainy day funds, and general reinvestment!" It's such an unnecessary self-own, and yet it's the default way that even *non-profits* are structured, which is insane. It's like if everyone thought you needed tapeworms or you wouldn't be able to digest food. No, you don't need the parasites, just because they insist on existing in your org.

@richpuchalsky @onepict this just isn't true. There's *millions* of open source systems out there you're using right now whether you know it or not. They run Facebook and Netflix and Google. The entire web is based on open source systems. Almost every NAS or disk system is open source or based on it, as is much of a modern router. This immensely lacks perspective.

When I started in the 90s we had DOS and Unix. Microsoft changed the landscape.
People see websites and commercial hardware like NAS as separate.

It’s unbelievable that I have to keep telling adults the same thing I tell my kids:
The goal is NOT to do it fast; it’s to do things right.
If you’re going to have to do the same thing five times because you rushed through it (and as a result, it’s incomplete, messy, incomprehensible, or doesn’t meet the standards, etc.), then you’ve wasted more of your and others' time.
Doing it right (or as well as you can), even if it takes longer, leads to a better outcome for everyone.
