Calling on fediverse moderators: if you see a post that kind of, sort of borders on racism, but you're not really too sure: yep, you're definitely dealing with a racist.

None of the redesigns and user experience tweaks will matter if we can't make this place welcoming to everyone.

This basket used to hold office supply type stuff, but one of the first things Milo did after coming home was claim the basket as his.

i feel a sense of clarity ever since i realized that "digital art" is just any art characterized by math being done quickly. so there's a continuum between (e.g.) Kepler's Rudolphine Tables and Minecraft
Ils me soûlent.

Two personnel recollections related to this:
I was a young postdoc working in the Super-K group in Japan when these results were presented at the International Neutrino meeting in Takayama (close to where SK is) in 1998. Kajita presented the results. Being in Japan for some time, away from home, I didn't have any nice clothes with me and wore jeans etc etc to the conference.
I was told through someone that knew them that the spouse of a Nobel Laureate was "Very disappointed in the way I was dressed."(!) After that I always wore nice clothes to that meeting :)
Another interesting fact that people forget: You always hear It repeated (and you see it here) that neutrinos having mass is "beyond" the Standard Model. But, I once asked Shelly Glashow at a lunch what he thought of this and he told me that the reason the standard model didn't have massive neutrinos in them was just that they didn't think neutrinos had mass when they wrote the papers.

@drwalters I love this concept. Am I understanding correctly that this particular site is only for New Zealand, though?
@jamey yes thats right - but you could do take the idea and run with it wherever you are!
@david_chisnall Had to look up chiu chow sauce to figure out how bad an idea this was. Apparently not everyone enjoys straight chili crisp. That does make sense.
@MaddieM4 The problem isn’t so much the heat as that it doesn’t (until you heat it in a pan) smell like something with chilli in, so you lick the spoon expecting slightly sweet garlic oil and there’s sudden chilli.
if i see anyone posting pro-ai stuff on my timeline, i'll block both their ass and their instance. fuck you
ok so go a head and block my ass idgaf
@markwyner started reading this and my brain was like "I remember encountering this..." so I went and looked and sure enough, found an old blog post.
I remember finding it fascinating, this idea of like: "it can functionally be 'easy to use' but unless people perceive it as 'easy to use' also, you won't get too far."

@jimniels rad. You were on it!
@keith one one level I can understand why Scotland would be harsher (they do seem to have slowed a wave of violent crime that was once making an actual dent in the population), but that seems very harsh when there isn't evidence of violent intent.
In England if your heavy tools/points/blades are in the boot of the car (*not* door cards) you would normally be OK, but I'm brown, I drive late at night a lot and own a distinctive car with decent performance that has historically been associated with the criminal fraternity so attracts eyes of both gammons and old bill (although nowadays overshadowed to some extent by the Golf R)
@vfrmedia yeah, cops are racist here too, I'm sad to say. The big slice of "discretion" that let's them get away with their racism also let's them arrest people for being scruffy (and foreign in this friend's case) or whatever. Being white and scruffy, I only see that sometimes. I can never work out if most people are willfully blind or just conform enough to be genuinely ignorant
If you live within traveling distance of Winters, CA, the USDA National Clonal Germplasm Repository is having its Fig & Grape Tasting on Aug 29. Admission is limited so you have to register beforehand.
Please be on your *best* behavior. I have seen people be very greedy and sharp elbows on occasion and I would hate to publish this info and have someone I helped hip to it behave that way.
USDA NCGR is one of the best things our taxes pay for & you can taste it.
