Two personnel recollections related to this:
I was a young postdoc working in the Super-K group in Japan when these results were presented at the International Neutrino meeting in Takayama (close to where SK is) in 1998. Kajita presented the results. Being in Japan for some time, away from home, I didn't have any nice clothes with me and wore jeans etc etc to the conference.
I was told through someone that knew them that the spouse of a Nobel Laureate was "Very disappointed in the way I was dressed."(!) After that I always wore nice clothes to that meeting :)
Another interesting fact that people forget: You always hear It repeated (and you see it here) that neutrinos having mass is "beyond" the Standard Model. But, I once asked Shelly Glashow at a lunch what he thought of this and he told me that the reason the standard model didn't have massive neutrinos in them was just that they didn't think neutrinos had mass when they wrote the papers.
