First of all, this is my thread, and my mentions. I decide what's main track and sidetrack.

Now that we've cleared that up: the fact that Twitter was effective for combating the harms that I want to talk about are important to me. Mastodon is not effective at those things, because there are not enough Black people here. But there could be.

Mastodon not being attractive as an acquisition target has nothing to do with whether or not there is or is not algorithmic content viewership here or editorial control. It is because even if there were 1000 algorithms and 1000 editors, they would all be independently owned. We agree on the decentralized point. I've already said that.

But we don't agree on what makes a platform vulnerable to fascist takeover.

As in, even if every major instance on Mastodon agreed to a single editor standard tomorrow, it would still not be as vulnerable as Twitter, because everyone could switch away from that the day after if they chose to. And because Mastodon is not a publicly traded company with a fiduciary responsibility to maximize shareholder returns.

If I email Eugen and Renaud tomorrow, and show them definitive proof that Mastodon is unlikely to generate $10B over the next 5 years, but that if he takes my $10B, me and my fashy friends will return that to shareholders within 2 years, Renaud can just laugh in my face, tell me to get stuffed, and block my number. He won't be sued later for not considering the offer. This has nothing to do with Mastodon being a media or not.

But I don't think a knee-jerk defence of the BSA is necessarily the right response.

As busy citizens, we do rely on media to keep governments and other institutions of state accountable, and we need them to have a reasonably free hand to do that job. We don't want to government of the day to be able to shut down programs or channels they find politically threatening, using spurious accusations of indecency or whatever.

Also, bwaaahahaha ... I was puzzled to find I own this paid pattern after it reappeared, as I thought I was looking to buy it when I noticed it missing. Since I couldn't purchase it, I couldn't add it to my library, but now it is there.

Apparently it was sent to me as a gift in 2018, probably during one of the Fishmas secret swaps I haven't joined for a couple years now. 🤣 De-listing the pattern disappeared it, but Ravelry is amazing, I'm guessing what happened is they corrected a DB orphan.

Watching Aliens for Mother's Day

I've been going through the #Farrer by-election results for first prefs by polling place, and it's a useful way to find the small towns where I'd feel quite uncomfortable if I stopped for a visit. Which is a legit consideration given how often I'm in tiny towns in that electorate.

Places where 76.8% of voters chose One Nation are unlikely to feel safe to anyone who's LGBTIQA+ or environmentally conscious or isn't white or any number of other aspects of identity. This is a shame, I thought we were making progress in some of those towns.

I used to pick "town to stop at" based on the combo of EV charger + pie shop. Now it'll be calculated based on best pie shop from a subset of towns with a One Nation vote below 37%, and an EV charger. So you create the subset of low-ON vote towns first, then from that a subset of towns with EV chargers, then rank them by best to worst pie shop.

@gusseting I don't know who built it but am fairly sure they did so solely to raise awareness. If they had nefarious goals, they would not wish to do this. The owner of every site we visit can do just the same as they have, many do.

I do agree it would be good that they make a statement of some sort as to what they do with data they collect.
