If you believe a chatbot is conscious and self-aware, and you are not agitating for chatbots to have civil rights, you are either not serious or else you believe slavery is just fine, really.
Me: "Okay, I need to backport the change I did on master to my next version branch."
Me: Open files, see it is in the old format.
Me: "The heck?"
Me: "Fuck fuck fuck. I think I forgot to either commit or push from my work computer. I'll need to go the office to fix this."
Me: Goes to the office, opens file, still old format.
Me: Check git commits, everything looks fine.
Me: Realizes I was breaking the main project into modules in master that should actually happen in next-version and some things got half-way.
Me: Finds the proper changes in the proper files.
Me: Facedesk. Hard.

By now you've all probably heard about the latest shenanigans from Google and their love for in-browser AI features (if you don't, this is the story: https://www.theverge.com/tech/924933/google-chrome-4gb-gemini-nano-ai-features).
Our team has been inspecting the Chromium code and disabling stuff from the very first version of Vivaldi (we have some posts about this in our blog, such as https://vivaldi.com/blog/news/alert-no-google-topics-in-vivaldi/ or https://vivaldi.com/blog/no-google-vivaldi-users-will-not-get-floced/).
We've also been very outspoken about our dislike of the built-in AI trend in the browser industry, but in case there's still any doubts: yes, we disable all Gemini-related features, and we've been doing it for a while.
Musk doesn’t care about Mars or automation or the electric car. He says he does because that is the public image of those free market sci-fi heroes of half-remembered books. He cares about his public image and stocks.
I dunno. This may be true, but he also comes across to me as the insecure tech nerd in a circle of much smarter tech nerds. It may be giving him too much credit to say that this image is part of a larger sales tactic.

"Why is everyone talking about AI sentience all of a sudden?"
The techbros want you to think the ethical issue in AI is whether we're being nice enough to the statistical model, not whether the AIs are causing psychosis or school shootings
"Why is everyone talking about identity walls on socials now?"
The techbros don't want to pay for moderators on their social platforms
@Edent thanks for the concern, Terrence! Just want to assure you that I’m Canadian and planning to take the full 12 month standard parental leave, like I did with both my other children.
I planned to work through Maintainer Summit because it’s honestly the highlight of my year — but I didn’t think through how much faster things progress when it’s your third kid 😅
@abbycabs I apologise for mis-nationalising you 😁

The vitamin K shot, a lifesaving injection given to newborns to prevent uncontrollable bleeding of the brain and intestines, has become collateral damage of the anti-vaccine movement.

@Vivaldi will you consider making it optional rather than fully removing it? Like an opt-in feature?
I know Vivaldi is very friendly when it comes to user choice.

Pro tip: To figure out What's Really Going On™ with an issue in tech, think about the expensive but necessary thing that the techbros are trying to avoid that would probably kill their business model if it were required by law

@bagder damm, the ONE weekend I had plans....
Concept: In lieu of a social media ban, a minimum per capita number of locally employed youth content moderation specialists
I'm just making stuff up here but
What if there were like youth sponsors who lived in your community, cared about the kids there, got their salary paid by the Platforms, and whose job it was to be someone that the kids could talk to when they get bullied
Because a youth ban on socials just sounds like giving kids a new reason not to talk to grown-ups about being bullied
