But over years, government spyware has been used to hack the phones of journalists, activists, lawyers, politicians, and seemingly regular people — and the pool of victims targeted by governments is quite wide, and larger than people might think.

Unfortunately is MinIO community version not only a "source-only" distribution now, they also decided to not add any more features to it. Fork incoming, I guess... ? Completely mind boggling to me that we threw away 5 billion phones in 2022.

Some of those could have been repurposed: smartphones are hardly innovating any more. The most eco-friendly phone is the one you already have.

We need to publicly support communities like @postmarketOS who work on making these phones repurposable, and @gnome that work on making a polished mobile experience that serves people, not creepy corporations.

very funny how the google maps team realized like 15 years ago that governments have extensive experience producing zip files full of CSVs and got just about every US transit agency and a significant portion of the rest of the world to do it. and then years later they decided to try and get them to also produce REST endpoints returning protobuf data, which it turns out governments are dramatically worse at
