Man, was doing some light investigation around smart garage door openers, as might consider replacing our old openers when getting insulated doors... and see that Chamberlain are still raging assholes. Sheesh. Probably eventually do genie wall mounts... want something I can without too much fuss get integrated into HA.
When all parts come together 😉 I now have S3 compatible storage with #garage in my homelab, using #nginx as reverse proxy and secured with a certificate from my own #StepCA based CA (Certificate Authority) that gets auto-renewed by #certbot. And this all works without any internet connection, as I also have a DNS server for my home network with the correct CNAME entry for s3.
So, I want to add an S3-compatible storage service local to my home lab (currently I'm using Backblaze). Basically I want it to run as a Docker service on my Synology NAS. It needs to run in the Synology because I want it to be external to my servers. I'm undecided between Garage or SeaweedFS.
Not MinIO. No, not Ceph. Not a VM. Not a Pi. Not in Kubernetes.
Anyone have/had that very particular setup and can share their experiences? Thanks in advance.
I’m just realizing right now that I’m still relying on a piece of #minio tech, namely minio-client (also known as mc or mcli).
As of now, I didn’t find a credible alternative, particularly something suited specifically at #garage.
Might be the right time to write something in #rust to help myself and maybe others.

If you're still relying on #MinIO, you're certainly aware that after their #OpenSource bait-and-switch, it is now a growing liability and technical debt in your infra.
#Ceph (a rock solid choice!) seems daunting & complex for your use case?
Check out #garage! #S3 storage written in #Rust, all relevant features & sponsored by several funds.
It's what I run in my own labs.

And further sprinkles here is the #AGPL license on #Deuxfleurs #garage. So whole rugpull scenario gets MUCH harder.
Which btw, is also hosted on their own #foregejo server. 😁 The further I go on Garage, the more I'm really falling in love with this option.
Consistency controls was first requirement. Development continuity is the big second. 😎
@stefano, I just watched the recording of Patrick Hausen's @EuroBSDCon distributed storage session and at the end of the session somebody said you might have compared #SeaweedFS with #Garage and that you found SeaweedFS more suitable.
I know that you blogged about running SeaweedFS but I wasn't aware you compared different #S3 platforms, if you indeed did, would you mind sharing your experiences?
Considering switching the #MinIO backend of #mstdndk to #Garage by #deuxfleurs. 3 replicas on #Kubernetes. Anyone with real life experience and/or tips? :-)
I don't want to alarm anyone, but King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard just made their entire discog free / pwyw on #bandcamp
