@stefan @tchambers
But we already have visibility controls (which I didn't believe bsky has) adding reply controls makes the possibility matrix quite complex. Maybe if we simplified it so you only had reply controls on public posts?

@scottjenson

I think reply controls being only available for public posts should be fine. But those are two different things, and I like how you can mix and match them for the right experience.

Maybe you want to be private, carefully vet your followers, and only share with them. Maybe you like engaging with strangers, so you post everything publicly and openly.

Maybe you want to share something publicly to get your ideas out there, but only care to hear from your curated network. A bit like posting on a blog with comments disabled. Or only allowing comments from people registered on your site. Everyone gets to read, but you don't care to moderate or respond to replies.

There's a lot going on in the United States. If you plan to exercise your legal right to protest, we kindly remind you to not RSVP online, "check in" on a social app, or share your name or email with protest organizers.

Protesting a tyrannical government is core to American culture, and Constitutionally enshrined. You can do so by simply showing up, while maintaining good opsec & data privacy.

thinking about how there's a true solution to the trolley problem and union workers were the ones to point it out

IWW IU 520 (Railroad Workers) PRESENTS:

TROLLEY PROBLEM SOLUTION

"Slip the switch" by flipping it while the trolley's front wheels have passed through, but before the back wheels do. This will cause a controlled derailment bringing the trolley to a safe halt.

Thank a rail worker today!

Crucial Track for January 29, 2026: "A Disappearing Act" by Coheed and Cambria

Today's prompt: What is your favorite song from last year?

It's hard to pick just one. I had a favorite album last year, but if I had to pick one track from it, it would be this.

@macmanx Great pick! I’d rather not choose between Ladders, Rise, or Window.

Probably Window if I was pressed.

Any reputable journalism organization would fire someone who manipulated a photo this way; many have done exactly that. It’s a shame our government can’t adhere to such a basic ethical and moral code too. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2026/01/beware-government-using-image-manipulation-propaganda

Beware: Government Using Image Manipulation for Propaganda

how do you determine the dividing line between “i only want to act in a way that’s coherent with a grounding philosophy” and “i’m rationalizing excuses to do or not do something”

@piarji Tentatively, the difference is whether you actually address criticisms of your reasoning (vs. using rhetorical tricks to avoid addressing it).

I feel like this practice should be a whole area of study that every kid should learn in school (and we've got a lot of remedial teaching to do).

Does anyone know a way to donate (online) to a Democratic candidate without going through Act Blue? I don't trust it anymore.

Please don't tell me why I should trust Act Blue. For me, that ship has sailed.

@xgranade I've found their organization, and can say they do have 501c3 status, but can't determine much beyond that. The Articles of Organization are extremely bare-bones, leaving much to the bylaws, and as far as I can tell the bylaws aren't published.

Since they established less than a year ago, there's not anything to learn from tax filings.

All in all I'm not sure what I've learned from this except that they do have someone very bureaucracy-savvy.

idk whether to link to it or not. On the one hand, it's public record, and has been outed on birdsite... On the other hand, if they're trying to keep a low profile, it feels discourteous to post it.

@mahryekuh I keep finding article after article about how the founders are all anonymous, which... I get the safety need, I really do! But also, asking folks to trust something that sensitive sight unseen is really not OK.

It's also very much so not how 501c3s work! And is that even the right structure, given the compromises you need to make in order to retain that status?

@stefan @andypiper @cheeaun

I will say that there is a long history of trying these types of nudges and they didn't tend to work. Two reasons:

1. trolls will be trolls
The reply guy urge runs so deep that appeals to humanity tend to bounce right off.

2. It just wears off
The first time it gets read, by the 8th time it's just a nuisance and ignored.

@scottjenson Yes, this is precisely why reply controls are needed. If someone wants to be a jerk, or cause harm, they simply will.

I think there is a group of people who genuinely don't realize how they come across and for them it might be helpful to get these sort of reminders, but I wouldn't dare to guess how big that group really is.
