found an old wald front wheel bike basket in a dumpster and just installed it on my oldest bike, and now I feel I’m on trend in PDX
Today was the public meeting of the building comitee of my hometown about this empty area.
I showed up with a sign. On one side I wrote in huge letters:
Data Center Go Home!
in small around it I wrote some short arguments reasons:
- our water
- our electricity
- data centers are not housing
- are not bringing jobs
- the dont pay taxes - (since when did amazon ever pay even one dime taxes in Germany) and will have enormous loss carryforwards so no taxes for decades.

@errant @davidgerard you’ll be left behind (on vacation in paradise)
@davidgerard
I assumed the AI threat to the economy would be the incestuous financial relationship that AI companies have with it? Is it not?
@dheadshot YOU MIGHT THINK THAT, but no it's the ooWEEoo hack o matic 666
@seachanger yeah, a couple years ago I had to replace my old Samsung under similar circumstances when it could no longer talk to my credit union
that was the real "can't live without it" app for me
@sarae planned obsolescence makes me pretty grumpy, but at the same time I’ve had the phone since 2018, so I have gotten 8 years out of it. wish I could simply replace the broken screen and old battery and update its little chip or whatever and keep going but noooo
The good news: I REALLY like Biarritz. ☀️🌴🌊😎
The bad news: I REALLY like Biarritz. 💸💸💸💸
@Gina woah, you were not so far away from me! That region is indeed amazing! And I see you got good food too! :P
Vote for me and I will put the whole CDG airport in jail.
@Gina oh you were in France? Yeah, sandwiches there are a rip off, it’s crazy. You can eat much better just outside of it! :)
"Two of the most exciting results, the experts say, incorporate preexisting ideas from the recent mathematical literature without properly citing them. This contradicts OpenAI’s initial press release, which said that the problems Astra addressed “have been open and seen no progress on the main result for at least a decade.” (OpenAI has since updated the language to be more accurate).
@timnitGebru define “properly”, is it mentioning the 10 zwar old paper or not?
right up until I notice I have not set up any swap because I’m running off a microSD card as it is and maybe I should throw a usb stick at it to format for swap before I kick off any ill-advised compilation tasks.
@djsundog Remember when Windows used to let you assign USB devices to swap on the fly?
@seachanger yay! You’re back! Hope you’ll stick around. 🙂
@impermanen_ 💕 ahh thanks for being so sweet! I’ll always be around
For the members, I’m just 1 call away, then it’s hellfire and burnt tires. Big WTP in the spot. 🇵🇷🇧🇧🇬🇾✊🏾

IMPORTANT MASTODON PASSWORD SECURITY/PRIVACY ISSUE…
----
For everyone:
If you are using the same password for Mastodon that you use anywhere else, CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD NOW.
A hacker is stealing accounts on Mastodon using something called “credential stuffing.” This means they use email/password combinations stolen from other sites.
This is a common hacking technique. But right now someone is targeting Mastodon accounts.
You can check if your email is in a data breach elsewhere:
Create a new strong password:
1. 12+ characters
2. Capital/lowercase letters
3. At least one special character
For admins:
The hacker is using the same unique user agent.
Go-http-client/1.1
We’re seeing a pattern of IPs, but they’re from varying ISPs. They’re also not changing the account emails.

@markwyner thanks for the tip. While I wasn't reusing, turns out my password was very inadequate to my standards and I was mostly relying on 2fa.
@csolisr "when people start talking about how great some preacher is, God gets lost in the shuffle."
I don't remember whose quotation it is but I came to it via a Buddhist meditation teacher.
Huh, I was at Apple.com and glanced at the Mac Studio page - https://www.apple.com/mac-studio/ - I notice they're explicitly pitching it for LLM on the desktop. I wonder how realistic that is… Hmm, let’s ask @simon, he’s closer to this stuff than most of us.
I’m pretty convinced that irrespective of all the issues, the economics of #genAI just don’t work with the current compute infrastructure requirements. Open models and what’s left of Moore’s law could be a really big deal.
@timbray Remember when we used the term “home computers”? This feels a lot like it… expensive, quickly outdated, quirky, limited but also fun and amazing, enriching, and sometimes narrowly useful.
@misty Did I mention our oven had an RF chip in it that was broadcasting an open wifi network with the password in the SSID, 24/7, and the only way to turn it off is to either sign up for an LG account and use "the app", or just... take your wall mounted oven out of the wall, open up the casing, remove more casing, then remove even more casing, and then you rip that stupid chip out?
@TheRealPomax Oh god. That's very silly.
Life is better with a void cat nearby. or a tuxedo cat... also orange cat
