Feels extremely weird that my wife had to mod our TV so it would stop exfiltrating all our data. At least it's possible...

@misty I'm terrified that my 2014 era dumb tv will die one day and i won't be able to replace it
@misty Did I mention our oven had an RF chip in it that was broadcasting an open wifi network with the password in the SSID, 24/7, and the only way to turn it off is to either sign up for an LG account and use "the app", or just... take your wall mounted oven out of the wall, open up the casing, remove more casing, then remove even more casing, and then you rip that stupid chip out?

@misty Wait, modded how? I currently have an old second hand pre-smart-TV-era TV but I will need to upgrade someday 🙃
@daisy It's apparently possible to install homebrew software on the LG TVs to customize how the firmware works, turn off certain software, etc
@daisy In this case my wife installed it so she could disable all of the data collection stuff and basically turn off all the harmful smart features without *fully* disconnecting it from the network. We like to have it connected on the LAN so we can let Home Assistant automate it, but we don’t want it talking to LG’s services. If you don’t care about that, you can always choose not to connect it to wifi at all.
