If only we had a way to funding paying people to work on things like this, without all the admin overhead and paperwork of grant funding. Like, for example, a weekly payment everyone gets to cover their core costs. So we can choose to public interest work on hack on itch-scratching projects instead of spending our days doing whatever rich people will pay us to do.
UBI would solve this. Just saying ...
i agree, but UBI will never come.
The best we can hope for is holding bitcoin it will appreciate forever - thats second best to UBI and it also doesnt require totalitarian surveillance that can be weaponized in a totalitarian way - which is even scarier because "nazis" are trending worldwide ...
also, bitcoin ends inflation so stuff stays affordable.
lastly without money printers, ppl HAVE to collaborate and will need to care finally.

NEW: The US Brought the G20 to North Carolina to Highlight the Regionโs Hurricane Recovery. Locals Say the Government Wasnโt Who Made it Possible.
G20 finance ministers and central bank governors met in Asheville last weekend. Billed as an opportunity to showcase the regionโs recovery after Hurricane Helene laid waste to western NC in 2024, locals took issue with their suffering and hard work being co-opted by representatives of the worldโs richest countries. @mttaggart >:( come on man this made my day so much worse. When will the madness end
@AmbianceAsunder Regarding the idea that models will "defend" against advertiser prompt injection: lol, lmao.
The commercial models will charge top dollar for advertisers to have authorized prompt injections. Whose ally do you think the AI corpos are?
Obviously I am unable to move until he releases me
I have been released from my duties
Remind me to eat some later, so I can fall asleep quickly
Israel is stoking a financial crisis in the West Bank by withholding funds from the PA. Among the sectors most affected is education, where teachers' salaries have been cut, and classes have been shuttered. The impacts might last a generation. https://mondoweiss.net/2026/06/how-israels-financial-strangulation-of-the-west-bank-is-killing-palestinian-public-education/

Truly excellent work, it's very hard to find bite-sized technomuggle-friendly explainers about the direct ties between AI and the TESCREAL cults. Plenty of otherwise-knowledgeable AI critics also don't seem to get it. The more sunlight-as-disinfectant, the better. Many thanks.
Congrats to the US Wikipedia workers!

@Wyatt_H_Knott about a third of their business is advertising, and it's the fastest growing segment by far. up 38% last quarter, and it's the main thing they stress as a growth area to investors:
they just bought an ad company that sells TV ads a few weeks ago, so yeah that granular shopping data linked to an identity is super fuckin valuable.
@jonny I basically go there as little as possible. Small town, limited options, but yeah, trying to not play the game.
Which is true for a LOT of retail these days. I just don't.
How come yโall eat oats in the morning and not fall asleep again?? Oatmeal makes me super sleepy!!

in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, both Uhura and Chekov are unfamiliar with Alameda, despite spending 4 years at Starfleet Academy in the Marin Headlands
one must conclude that Alameda was hit by a small nuclear weapon during WW3 and destroyed
@beka_valentine TBF, the US Navy yards have probably been closed for several years by the time they were there. Also, probably a major target in WWIII, so yeah. That too.
@jonny I go into wal-mart for fun now to see if I can catch them at it again. No phone, ballcap, long sleeves so they can't see my tats, then head for appliances and watch the blue tags ripple as I walk down the aisle. I won't buy anything that has a LCD pricetag anymore. But I also notice they're making it harder and harder to pay cash - all the self-serve registers are card only, and they'll have like ONE human register open. They WANT that profile data.

Republicans paid prisons $10 an hour so prisoners make political advertisements for those Republicans for $2 an hour.
Imagine being forced to advertise the political campaign of the people who keep you inprisoned.
