@kate I read once that it wasn't a coincidence that the spiritualist and suffragist movements overlapped. Women were super super involved in the spiritualist movement. The piece argued that doing magic was a practice in agency - in believing that your thoughts and actions could influence the world. And even though magic isn't real, the practice of it helped women believe they could actually affect the world around them, powerfully. And then they did.
Gardening is a little like that I think, with more huckleberries.
i tried to find the original article i read on magic and suffragettes and failed (it was at least a decade ago), but found much more on the topic of spiritualism and the women’s suffrage movement - like how spiritualism let women participate in the public sphere and in positions of authority
When spirits inspired trance lecturers they often delivered communications on subjects they were concerned about during their own lifetime. For example, Benjamin Franklin was often channeled for the communication of scientific information. The notion that spirit mediums could communicate complex ideas was understood as evidence of spirit presence because most of the mediums were people who did not have formal education. Cora Scott was so popular and trusted because everything rested on the “fact” that a young woman could never produce the kinds of talks and speeches that she delivered. It had to be the voice of spirit because a young girl is just too dumb to come up with this stuff herself. Being in trance allowed women to say things that they could not say in the general public.
And it provided a means for women to travel and build community and organize together around all sorts of issues - including abolitionism.
@wxcafe no i get you. still worth a try though
then we also have to make assembly-in-Forth implementations of all the basic Forth words that are implemented in Forth. that, however, requires looking up words by name, which was functionality we needed to add. so, now we have! yay.

@Tutanota Privacy is… that friend who always says they’re on their way, but never arrives—because Google picked them up first.

I disagree.
User-led options are far superior to server-led controls because the require effort by the user.
I as an administrator do not know (nor really care) what user/content might be "problematic" to another user.
This is the internet. There are people on here you will not like or want to associate with.
If a user is so fragile that they cannot be exposed long enough to block it, then the user probably should not be on the internet anyway.

Hello everyone ☀️☀️☀️ This is your friend Khaled from Rafah, #Gaza Strip, #Palestine. How are you doing today? How was your day? I hope you’re well and the sun shines over your head, warms your heart and gives you a smile!
Today I’d like to talk to you about electricity in Gaza, and solar panels!
Did you know that Gaza used to have the highest density of rooftop solar panels in the world, before the current genocidal massacre? It’s truly a remarkable place.

Thank you very much for sharing this. While I like what is written there, I was missing two things:
1️⃣ All the computers that were flown up there at great expense will be outdated in some 2-3 years and will require regular (expensive) replacement.
2️⃣ Several of those massive satellites with huge solar panels and even larger cooling will at some point fall on our heads, uncontrolled (not all)
IMHO, putting this into space is also a sign of the tech billionaire mind: No laws to obey
I’m wondering whether the lack of a theory of the biosphere as a whole is one of the biggest problems of today’s environmental movement. I’ve yet to see ideas debated in the movement’s mainstream that go beyond protecting areas here and there, reducing damages and limiting pollution (and quaint socialist paradigms in some corners). The current theory-minimising approach is probably meant to reduce the surface that can be attacked, and look pragmatic. That’s clearly not working out.
@christianschwaegerl
You're absolutely right. There's a huge lot that can be said about that. A hundred years after positioning the biosphere as part of Earth's mechanisms, more than a passenger, we still only have parts but no clear picture of ecological functioning. Biodiv people don't talk to thermodynamics people and these not much to biogeochemists and neither to ecologists, then there's evolution ... I'm trying to write a paper on this, but it's difficult. But it's our living habitat. 👍
@lritter what are some good dnb and psytrance albums you like
@pmdj thanks again 😊 we’d def make it nature trip adjacent
@janl One of these years I’ll get to experience Fuji “properly” whatever that means. So far we only caught a few glimpses from the Tōkaidō Shinkansen window, and on the way up to Hakone before the weather turned overnight.
Seemed too much of a challenge this time around though, and we already had to cut some lower hanging fruit for time/budget reasons.
@TheBreadmonkey you just need to accessorise properly.
