@janl It’s a fairly long way to go from Tokyo as a day trip, and you could in theory combine it with some kind of Fuji-enjoying excursion. But as the test run schedule is only published a few days ahead, it’s difficult to plan accommodation. But you have that problem anyway with Fuji and the weather. (Speaking from experience of getting soaked & freezing in heavy sleet while visiting Hakone one April…)
The attached museum is interesting enough, but not worth a trip without test runs.

@janl One of these years I’ll get to experience Fuji “properly” whatever that means. So far we only caught a few glimpses from the Tōkaidō Shinkansen window, and on the way up to Hakone before the weather turned overnight.
Seemed too much of a challenge this time around though, and we already had to cut some lower hanging fruit for time/budget reasons.
@janl Oh, and in terms of train nerdery, you can apparently visit the Shinkansen maintenance works just outside Sendai. We just couldn’t come up with enough else to do up there, and moving on every 1-2 days is no fun with kids.
We still didn’t make it to the railway museum at Saitama but tbh between today and SCMaglev in Nagoya, we already got our train museum fixes. Particularly as one of the main attractions at Saitama is the Shinkansen simulator - SCMaglev has one too & less busy.
