Deeply threatening when people do this and not sure why there's not better literacy on this in left leaning spaces especially given the last decade+ of persecuting teachers

This weekend the temperatures in Germany dropped way low into the negative -10's °C - but today was like the perfect day for a sunny and yet cold walk outside. Took a few snapshots this afternoon (including some deers I scared off :D)

I love this. Homeless deserve "privacy, consent, respect. They are vulnerable humans."
Having a camera isn't a free pass to exploit others for "an edgy" photo.
The poor 286 took some of the corrosion too.
I don't have time to completely disassemble it, wash it, scrape, tin and patch the traces. This'll probably have to wait a vacation.
For now, I'll snip the battery away, clean with some vinega and a brush, and then wash away with alcohol. Should stabilize it enough to wait for a better occasion.
Next step for this taiwanese Laptop will be to dump the ROMs and save them to archive.org
Will get to that next week.

Update. "Women are significantly underrepresented among highly cited scholars globally (0.255 women per man) and receive fewer citations and have lower h-indexes than men in most regions and disciplines. However, after controlling for productivity and career length, female scholars are cited more than men in the pooled sample, Asia, Europe, and in two fields (natural sciences and exact sciences/physics). Despite this, women’s h-index remains significantly lower than men’s in all regions except Africa and South America, and in all fields except social sciences."

Update. "Women are markedly underrepresented among authors of retracted publications, particularly in cases involving multiple retractions."

The article is #OpenAccess. But on the day of publication, this #paywalled comment by Jenna Ahart appeared in Nature.

We always hear about nature being in trouble, but this week, RTÉ reports that the beautiful Puffins have returned to Isle of Muck near Islandmagee northeast of Belfast, after having gone locally extinct for decades.

'The leaders of Canada, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK, Germany, Norway and senior EU officials issued a joint statement from a G20 summit on Saturday expressing concern that the 28-point proposal on the table “would leave Ukraine vulnerable to attack”.'
'German Chancellor Friedrich Merz says he is "sceptical" a deal on Ukraine can be reached by Trump's Thursday deadline, adding that "we are very far from that".
Speaking on the sidelines of the G20 in Johannesburg (which the U.S. did not attend), Merz says: "That doesn't mean it's completely impossible to reach..." adding that he is "sceptical whether such an outcome is possible given the current differences".'
@EverydayMoggie
I was thinking this - I can see it, but it's not *super* obvious to me. I think if I was a young'un just starting out in math, I would want to cut it out and fold it in half to check 😅
(Ooh though I remember now we had little mirror thingies to check, too?)

La COP30 vient de finir, sans mention des énergies fossiles dans le texte final. L'éléphant dans la pièce transformé en souris par des lobbyistes particulièrement actifs cette année pour saboter les négociations climatiques. Analyse :

It's Sunday morning in the fediverse.
You know what to do.
@neil Its sunday morning in the fediverse and you are a wonderful boost.
But someone in this supply chain is skimming off A LOT of money.
According to this website:
https://www.numbeo.com/food-prices/in/Gaza?displayCurrency=GBP
rice in Gaza is currently £18/kg (that's much less than my contacts in Gaza say they're paying).
According to the same website
https://www.numbeo.com/food-prices/in/Cairo-Egypt?displayCurrency=GBP
the same kilogram of rice costs £0.60 in Cairo, Egypt, 200 km away.
So if you load a 40 ton truck with rice in Cairo and drive it 200km, you can make a profit of over half a million pounds.

When I look at the donations to the people I'm giving to in #Gaza, some of them are receiving far more money than I have. But actually they have to, because my total income would not keep a family in Gaza alive. It feels weird to be giving money to people who are 'richer' than me -- but then, I can get 20kg of white basmati rice here for £50, so in food money terms £50 here is worth twenty times what £50 is worth there.

Had dinner with somebody I've not seen since 2019 (since she left London to go back to Poland) and we had such a lovely time
