People think that by adding statements like, "Don't do <whatever bad thing>" to LLM prompts, that the LLM will not do the bad thing. Folks, that's not how LLMs work. They just recreate patterns of words. They don't think, they don't understand, they don't take commands. They sometimes appear to do these things because they reproduce patterns and we are designed to detect patterns, so it looks like thinking to us. It's not. There's no logic. They cannot take orders or keep promises. #LLM #AI

Normally though Hare's malloc rounds the size to a power of 2 & looks up that "bucket". If null it falls back to arena allocation, or kernel-allocating a new arena. Otherwise it pops that entry off that bin's linkedlist & validates it. Regardless it saves the allocated size to this "chunk" & increments a profiling counter.
Meanwhile free locates the header fields from the pointer, decrements that counter, considers asking the kernel to free it, & pushes it onto the correct bin.

Arena allocation btw means incrementing a pointer into free memory.
Given a size of 0 realloc's synonymous with free, given NULL its synonymous with malloc. Otherwise it validates that we've changing its effective size before allocating, copying the memory, & freeing. Could this be faster?
Upon shutdown it validates all remaining allocations, & would validate there aren't any if they provided themselves a way to check if they're crashing.

I try to be polite when I write prompts for LLMs. Especially in languages like Korean or Japanese that have grammatical honorifics, I make sure to use the formal, respectful form of speech (what's known as 敬語—gyeongeo or keigo). I joke with my friends that I'm using polite language early on to be pardoned for my sins when AI eventually takes over the world, but the real reason is that I don't want to get used to speaking to someone in a commanding tone. It makes me think I might start believing it's “okay” to order around certain intelligent beings, almost like condoning slavery.
Today, we are back at square one, but we have advantages that Tarbell and the other trustbusters lacked. For one thing, we have *them*, the lessons of their fight and the inspiration of their victory. For another, we have the political wind at our back.
