@mattblaze I'm sure your post is going to be incredibly popular on Mastodon, but here's the key difference, I think:
AI can be useful to me in my own home without depending on any valuation, inflated or otherwise, from any outsider.
It helped me improve my code, for my own use and not for distribution.
@mattblaze except that, at least from where I sit, it looks like many of the people who were deadset against blockchain have jumped into AI with both feet. Make it make sense.

Yes, but unfortunately the "AI changes everything" people seem to be a lot more vocal and getting more attention.
It's just like the way the Segway completely changed the way cities work.

segway escooters are quite popular where i live. there are almost as many escooters as there are bikes. they make the outdoors cleaner, safer and quiter.
unfortunately, AI slop is indeed everywhere too, changing everything. posters, menus, invitations...
@mattblaze funny you should say that, that kinda all went into e-scooters, and rental e-scooters have absolutely had an impact on cities
@navi it seems like scooters had a modest impact, probably mostly offsetting personally owned bicycles. I don’t think they’ve come anywhere close to “changing how cities work” (the supposed promise of the segway). A thing can be successful without being “revolutionary”.
@mattblaze Scooters, at least in my area, aren't changing much, even though we're seeing more of them.
Biggest impact seems to be the amount of injuries people are being seen for. Kind of like this decade's high impact aerobics, or yoga.
I think one can argue rental e-bikes are changing the way London works. A grester impact in two/three years than standard bikes have made in the last 20/30 years.
Especially amongst the young.
People don't collect Segways as a commodity.
#Cryptocurrency has held its value while #AI is crashing.

We never had a Segway bubble. The AI one could change things quite a bit when it bursts 😃
@mattblaze tech used to be exciting.. DirectX 7 with Nvidia Riva TNT2 etc.
Now it is boring and unaffordable.
