Somewhere out there, there is a screenshot of one of the most prophetic tweets I ever saw (and I really wish I could find it!) describing how the arc of grift stated with cryptocurrency, bent through NFTs and Al and ends in quantum computing.
It's glorious.

@mattblaze A practical way to separate use from hype is a small before-and-after test on one real task: same input, same quality bar, and time measured including checking and corrections. If the result improves, keep that use. If it only makes a prettier demo, that is useful to know too.

@mattblaze I'm sure your post is going to be incredibly popular on Mastodon, but here's the key difference, I think:
AI can be useful to me in my own home without depending on any valuation, inflated or otherwise, from any outsider.
It helped me improve my code, for my own use and not for distribution.
@buckfiftyseven No one said AI techniques aren't useful for some things. The field has been around for over 50 years. The problem is people who don't understand what it does and doesn't do falling into a cult-like hype cycle.

@mattblaze except that, at least from where I sit, it looks like many of the people who were deadset against blockchain have jumped into AI with both feet. Make it make sense.

@mattblaze not everything, no. but I can not deny it has influenced quite a bit already.
it’s still very young. however I am waiting for the moment the charges going up to cover the costs. And if it’s still affordable or “interesting”. We will see.
