Yes, exactly — when big platforms cut their safety standards, smaller ones like Pixelfed and Loops show what a network built on respect actually looks like. The roadmap is a smart move.
@pixelfed I would like to see the option to block posts with certain keywords from showing up in my feed entirely. Being confronted with crap content and then having to think about it and go through the steps to not see it is just tiring. I'd rather protect my peace than provide oxygen to and waste neurons on people with shitty takes.

And now those same companies are lobbying to shut the open social web down, because somehow that's necessary to protect children despite the open social web having existed with little incident for 30 years now. Liars, the lot of them.

@pixelfed togglable warnings, which confirm if you want tol play the video, like mastodon cw's. You can optionally have them not show and automatically play.
@pixelfed my only ask is that *everything* be evidence based. And that evidence be associated to the decisions. That's pretty much it.
@pixelfed as a parent, I want to make sure any digital experience my child is having can be paused so they can go eat dinner and do their chores. If they feel like they are “missing something” then they won’t want to turn it off for a time. It’s a real big problem with multiplayer gaming. Anything that’s scrolling by needs to have a pause button so there is no FOMO. They don’t want to lose their place in the video, so give them bookmarks that go back to the same place.
@suzannealdrich Well lucky for you we have a parental controls feature that allows parents to build special child accounts that they manage, with several access and control limits, but we are working on a much more powerful experience with the new webUI.
@pixelfed @suzannealdrich I would like to see an option for finite scroll; so a "next page" or "load more" button after a certain number of posts.
it may not seem helpful but my mastodon does this sometime (maybe as a bug?) and that's usually the moment where I switch to doing something else, so I guess it helps psychologically :)
@pixelfed @suzannealdrich I think it would be a good idea to have a switch to disable viewing stories. The 24h limit can create FOMO.
This place also has infinite scroll. Is that making us all addicted and mentally unhealthy? Of course not.
This entire moral panic about new-media “addiction” is fake. They were saying the same damn thing about TV 30 years ago, and it was fake that time, too.
If anything has affected kids' attention and comprehension, it's COVID and despair at the economy collapsing. Blaming their methods of coping with hardship only makes the hardship worse. Stop it.
@argv_minus_one @Gustodon @pixelfed To be sure, for me infinite scroll is a list with no 'total' results/no end. The list grows based on a new algorithmic search and will never stop. I'm not talking about the UX design that replaced the old paging which is used here.
This is not about a panic/scare for something new. The effects of an algorithmic infinite scroll are understood and have all the traits to fuel addiction (this is the reason why I left/or try to leaf those platforms).
I'll remind you all that old people have been panicking and trying to outlaw young people's society and amusements for literal centuries. Before TikTok and social media, it was video games. Before that, it was chat rooms. Before that, it was Dungeons & Dragons. Before that, it was comic books. Before that, it was paper-back novels. Before that, it was books in general.
It's the same scam, being repeated over and over and over again. Stop falling for it!

I don't think you could find an equivalent study for books.
@pixelfed the rules was always loose. I reported for example pedophilia jokes or call for genocide and the result is always we did not find anything wrong

@pixelfed Top request: per post reply controls (followers only, mentioned only) plus a pile-on brake that auto-limits replies from brand new accounts when a post suddenly takes off. Subscribable blocklists that show why each account is on them would be a close second.
