Entryway of the Acacia Apartments (1922) in Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood.
The dominant feature is clearly the stone arch, which gives the portal a sense of weight and permanence, but is itself simple and restrained. The green tile field within the arch serves as a visual backdrop to a decorative crest, and adds a touch of color and a modern geometric pattern to the composition.
The crest itself resembles a heraldic shield but is rendered as an abstract geometric ornament that feels proto-Art Deco in nature. A large keystone at the top of the arch—the most ornate element in the composition adorned with floral and leaf motifs—connects the arch to a horizontal belt cornice in the same stone material and to a wrought-iron balcony above. The wood door and sidelights are fairly plain, with the door's leaded-glass window echoing the curve of the main arch above.
Overall, the architecture of the entryway mixes Classical and emerging Modernist elements to create a dignified and monumental portal.
