It's been a tough few years for MacStories.
An explanation of why we resumed posting on X, and what comes next:
@viticci Some recent choice words from Musk, proud owner of Twitter:
* "Anyone who opposes remigration is a traitor"
* "She is a traitor to the West, plain and simple" (in reference to a recent interviewer)
* "Deal with traitors before invaders. They are committing high treason."
* "First the traitors, then the invaders" (screenshot from Citizen Vigilante pointing gun at camera)
Per Nate Silver, Twitter is a far-right cesspit: https://www.natesilver.net/p/social-media-has-become-a-freak-show
I am sad & embarrassed on your behalf.
@viticci Absurd and vile.
There has to be a line somewhere, and honestly supporting a Nazi CSAM site and the genocidal maniac who owns is obviously way over the line.
How do you think your queer (former) audience feels about this? Or any other group being harmed by those bigots?
As a queer person, I’m done. I hope your new Nazi audience gets you the business you want, I guess, but it won’t be mine.
@viticci A fair decision - please don't be swayed by the mob. It should be plainly obvious to anyone that you don't need to agree with the politics of someone who owns a company to use the product or services that company provides. Plus: Twitter was bad for society long before Elon Musk made it even worse. @viticci as someone who has worked on the business side of publishing for almost a decade, I recognize it’s hard cutting yourself off from those vibrant parts of X. Lord knows I miss the parts of X with the hardware, enthusiasts and gaming technology pundits. I just think that given your position in this community you could have done more good working to recreate spaces for those audiences to exist outside of X.
@viticci Unfollowed, sorry.
@viticci Going to change your name to AIstories next? Only crowd whose attention you’ll get on X, apart from Nazis…
@viticci I understand the reasons, & those who loathe #ElonMusk may not accept the business reality & cultural position that #X occupies right now.
I stayed on 𝕏 for business & political reasons.
𝕏 is still the fastest way to contact companies, government agencies & politicians. Also the #XMoney IntraFi banking setup is unrivaled in public access.
That said, I will continue to enthusiastically use #Fediverse apps (primarily #Mastodon, #WordPress, #Flipboard & #Threads).
@viticci perhaps it’s been tough because it feels like 80% of the stories on MacStories (on which this explanation bafflingly does not appear) are about AI agents and other such garbage. Can’t imagine that’s what people who pay for your work signed up for. Good luck courting the AI chuds, hopefully you can cultivate a new audience after slowly alienating the one you spend so many years building and developing a trust with.
@viticci hey, Federico. Thanks for the transparency and the honest assessment. Most accounts that have reopened on X haven't been this clear about it.
@viticci my question for you is: what can we in the Fediverse community do to keep MacStories active here as well? What metrics do you use to determine if a platform like this is working for you?
@viticci What rubbish. Posting to the Nazi bar for clicks for your AI grift is inexcusable. Hope it was worth burning any goodwill you had here.
@viticci Good luck with your new audience.
@viticci So… you think is better to lose your Mastodon readers…
@viticci This reminds me of Apple‘s „Crushed“ ad. Back then, they did not read the room - as you said - and now you did not either.
@viticci thank you for writing this! It's a necessary step you have to take to keep Macstories going, and I, as always, will be more than happy to support the work!
