What do you think is the reason #Threads chose to turn off #ActivityPub by default?
Oh no…now Meta is automatically sharing our private messages to its AI. As far as I can tell, you can only turn it off for each message thread, one at a time (and there seems to be no option to turn it off at all for group threads!). Yet another privacy disaster from Facebook.
I use Messenger btw for family and non-tech friends, so don’t (ahem) shoot the messenger.
Yet another reason, btw, not to trust #Threads.
Meta an evil company? How can it be?! They’re partners, alongside Mastodon gGmbH, at the @swf (https://socialwebfoundation.org)

Meta's AI will also see any post shared on the Fedi if it was shared on Threads.
Every post you’ve ever made anywhere within Meta’s ecosystem. Every photo you’ve ever shared. It doesn’t matter if you thought it was “private” or shared only with yourself — the AI has access to everything.
As the old saying goes: "All your base are belong to us!"

Meta is protecting ICE.
If you post about an ongoing event involving ICE, your post may be delayed from appearing in the general feed.
If you encourage people to assist those under threat from ICE, your account may be suspended or terminated, and your information may be forwarded to law enforcement.
I really do work for an evil company.
Additionally, if you share any current information concerning Donald Trump and his associates, your post may be delayed from appearing in the general feed.
For example, if you saw Robert F. Kennedy Jr. eating a hamburger at McDonald’s and posted a selfie with him in the background, no one would see that you shared it for several hours.
Interestingly enough, if you shared the current whereabouts of someone who does not support Donald Trump — such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or Jasmine Crockett — there would be no delay in Meta’s general feed.
This paints an awful image, especially since the justification for delaying posts about Donald Trump and his associates is "general safety."

Short message services: Threads closes to X
New key figures on short message services show that the two major providers are in a neck-and-neck race. Things are getting tight for X.
Don’t fall for this again, hundreds of millions of people. https://techcrunch.com/2025/07/07/threads-is-nearing-xs-daily-app-users-new-data-shows/
Threads is nearing X’s daily app users, new data shows. #threads

"That’s why Mastodon has failed to catch on, because you have to manually select servers and systems, while Threads has thrived because all you need to do is tap a link from IG to create an account."
