@rolle @stefan You seem both active on ATproto and interested in decentralization. Do you have any thoughts (or other people's written thoughts) about the centralization of the DIDs (afaik the Bluesky company is administering all these IDs on the protocol) and how resource intensive it is to run ones own relay, compared to ATproto?

@rolle @stefan I looked into Eurosky. They seem like an ok organisation and I'm rooting for them, but it's a bit sad if they're only strengthening the power of Bluesky and encourage more centralization that way. And maybe Bluesky will have to enshittify their network at some time to satisfy investors?
@ahaldorsen Honestly, I'm not super interested in ATProto/Atmosphere, beyond having a general sense of where things are, until Bluesky the company folds in maybe about 2-3 years. Then we'll see if the protocol/platform has legs.
@stefan Definitely! The Bluesky company going bankrupt or having to take drastic actions would be a good test on the protocol.
@ahaldorsen I wouldn't say I'm exactly "active" in the ATProto community, but I do try to keep up with what's happening over there in general.
As for DIDs, the PLC directory is being transferred to an independent organization.

I don't know a ton about hosting the different layers of the ATProto stack, just that it can all be done pretty cheaply if you accept the same trade-offs as with Mastodon/fediverse software:

It will still be centralized, even if it is by and independent org. Though you can say the same with the fediverse and ICANN, i guess.
I wonder how practical these "scaled down" ATproto AppViews and Relays really are, as the protocol doesn't seem to be designed for it. Will you still get all replies on your posts and other necessary interactions?

Sorry, I have not tried setting this up myself, nor do I have a ton of technical knowledge in this area.
As for the topic of centralization, I think both networks just approach it differently.
If you look at https://atp.fyi/network, there is already a ton of community infrastructure, and Blacksky has been doing a lot of work around this as well, even hosting other communities now.
