when meta tells you who they are, believe them https://techcrunch.com/2026/07/23/meta-launched-a-new-ai-optimism-ad-set-to-a-song-about-human-extinction/
@davidgerard I kind of get the feeling that for Zuckerberg, human extinction maybe is an optimistic scenario. He strikes me as the kind of person a Fallout player might find in an old Vault Tech bunker, ancient and desiccated but still hooked up to a VR playland full of fake people and smiling about it.
@davidgerard Believe incentives, not advertising.
@davidgerard ohh, this reminds me David Bowie's song Space Oddity used to celebrate successful moon landings

>> #Meta launched a new #AI optimism ad set to a song about human extinction…
No doubt recommended by their AI #recommendationEngine.
@davidgerard
"Meta launched a new AI optimism ad set to a song about human extinction"
Because OF COURSE they fucking did.

@davidgerard … so I read the TechCrunch article, the first thing they asked me is to disable my ad-blocker. I wiggled out of this requirement and clicked the link pointing to the lyrics of the David Bowie song, and there the banner below greeted me — «We and our 1022 partners process your personal data, e.g. your IP-number, using technology such as cookies to store and access information on your device in order to serve personalized ads and content…». Sad sad times.
But I very much like this sentence in the TechCrunch article: «These guys [the tech bros] make a great argument for the value of studying the humanities.»
@davidgerard reminds me of the old IE ad, with the slogan "Where do you want to go today?", using Mozart's Requiem as the background music, where the chorus is singing "Confutatis maledictis, flammis acribus
addictis", which can be translated as "The damned and accursed are convicted
to the flames of hell".
@davidgerard A theme song about human extinction is more suited to #Anthropic(ide) than #Meta. 🤷🏻♂️
@davidgerard Meta seems to run on stolen ideas and self-owns -- and somehow they print money doing it.
I don't understand this world and I would like to get off the ride now.
It's a shame the Bowie estate allowed this.
@davidgerard "These guys make a great argument for the value of studying the humanities." Yes. Yes, indeed. I also like the featured Alex Blechman tweet very much. It summarizes so well my WTF!? face upon Sillicon Valley's strange literary inspirations. You often wonder, if they've read the same book. If so, they definitely did not draw the same conclusions.
@davidgerard Call us tone-deaf?
Reminds me of when MSN used 'Homeward Bound' the soundtrack for their ads. The lyrics just after the ad ended were:
Every day's an endless stream,
of cigarettes and magazines,
and all my words come back to me,
in shades of mediocrity,
like emptiness in harmony.
Which, actually, was quite appropriate for MSN.
@david_chisnall @davidgerard I mean, Microsoft famously asked the Stones for an edit of "Start Me Up" for the Windows 95 release, to remove the repeating refrain that "You make a grown man CRYYYYY!"
