Wrapping up a very exciting week as we close out the 2026 Cwtch Hackathon!
This week we made amazing progress on a new iteration of peer-to-peer groups, and tackled some long standing maintenance tasks in preparation for the next version of Cwtch.
It has been a long time since the core team got together in person to hack on cwtch, and we leave this week feeling very excited about what happens next.

Cwtch also requires both sender and receiver to be online at the same time, right? Is there a way to self-host a server that would hold messages for you until you're back online?

Cwtch currently has support for a different kind of group based on untrusted architecture which can be used for offline messaging but is too expensive and unperformant for that kind of personal use.
One of the goals of the hackathon this week was the introduce of a new kind of group to make it efficient to create those kinds of servers (as well as ones for hosting small groups).
@jmmonteiro that would be nice I dont know - no quantum resistant encryption is a non-starter for me
The tor network has been moving to supporting PQ between relays and there has been some progress working out what PQ onion routing might look like (very much still active-research)
We do not believe that at this time we could layer any PQ in a way that did not jeopardize other privacy properties (e.g. the asymmetry of mlkem would undermine certain deniability properties)
Those properties are as important and not worth breaking for a partial solution.
