I'm going to be devastated if Bill C-22 passes and Signal leaves Canada. I don't use other rich messaging apps, it'll be back to just SMS. I share Signal's philosophy, I would rather chat while we all agree we are being monitored than have an earnest conversation on a backdoored platform.

On the other hand, Signal's link to phone numbers means I don't use their social features. I'm not out with coworkers. I really hope Signal is able to remain in Canada long enough for that not to be the case. I think ✨ Magical Bitch Brie ✨ might have fun with Stories in a way that egg Brie had no interest.

I know I shared Signals new features announcement, because it's what inspired this. If you haven't heard, though, Signal has been clear that if Bill C-22 passes they will exit Canada rather than compromise the app's encryption and metadata protocols.

You and I might be willing to use a VPN to access Signal, or some other means. None of those other people I speak to will, though. What good is a disconnected telephone?
