Our site admin ( @jerry) is about to get walloped with additional hosting fees, thanks to the great AIpocalypse that is messing up everything with datacenter costs.

I love the fediverse because there are no bullshit targeted ads and no bullshit algorithm-boosted messaging. Just a bunch of humans running servers. The downside of this is there is very little money in running servers and they cost more and more to keep going.

I increased my donation a bit today to help keep up with the costs.

Consult your instance admin for where to donate. In our case you can look at Jerry's profile for the official donation places. If you can afford to donate please do. If you can afford to increase your donation, please do that too.

@reverseics @jerry As I understand it, there is a general expectation that running a server (or paying hosting fees) in general will rapidly go up everywhere. This expectation is driven by the news that current and planned production of computer storage is being pre-purchased by massive AI data centers, thus decreasing supply for everyone else.

Most Fediverse instances have some way to solicit donations, and if you can afford to do so, please donate. Better yet, set up an ongoing subscription if your instance provides that.

You can also help defray costs. Do you really need your posts with their included multimedia to stay forever? If not, (and I bet for most of us the answer really is no,) many Fediverse offerings such as Mastodon include settings you can use to have your posts “expire” after a period of time so that your account does not need ever increasing storage.

@BrianJohnson Posts that expire should have a warning to others that they will expire because it is ghastly and highly unfair to people you have conversations with when the OG post disappears but remnants of the remaining replies are ghosting around out of context.

A notice in the profile is not enough. When someone goes to reply, they should be notified in some fashion. #MastoAdmin #Mastodon #Fediverse

@paul @BrianJohnson @reverseics for what it's worth, deleting posts won't really change much in terms of cost. The cost is in the hardware, not the storage, and is mainly a function of how many concurrent users there are. Mastodon smashes down media to the point where the impact is pretty negligible. After 9 years of my memes and flower pics, I think we have 2TB of media storage used.

@jerry FWIW, I'm in my 4th year with mine, single hosted, and 200GB. Media cleaned out at 15 days to beat the 14-day redownload lockout. I subscribed to several relays, including yours.
