US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has come under strong criticism after suggesting it would be acceptable for Israel to take all of the territory "between the Nile and Euphrates" because the land was promised by God in the Bible.

Several Arab countries have denounced the remarks as "absurd" and "provocative", coming at a time when politicians in Netanyahu's government have openly entertained the notion of a "Greater Israel".

To paraphrase Monty Python: "promises made in ancient texts is no basis for determining a modern country's borders".

Its OK when its someone else, but if we were to, say, enforce the British "right" to North America (as ordered by King James 6th and others), it would suddenly be "help, I'm being attacked!"

@aral Drumpf and co are ramping up their efforts to destabilise society. All ambassadors are tasked with poking up controversies to aid the right wing nutcases. This is probably just another example.

@greenWhale It’s not just Trump. The one thing that unites Democrats and Republicans (and has done through the years) is their continued arming and funding of Israel and its ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.

(The only difference is, the Democrats do it with a gracious smile while wearing a suit and tie and the Republicans do it clad in a wifebeater with both middle fingers raised in your face.)

@aral I know. But in this particular instance: they are all poking up resentment at once in Europe. The USA ambassador in Belgium is picking fights with our residing racist social democrat Connor 'matrakskeklop' Rousseau, for instance.
