An interesting journey in story form, showing how English changed over time.

How far back in time can you understand English?

@derickr I started having trouble around 1300, which forced me to read it out loud, which tends to help me when reading middle English. I can grasp pretty much everything up until 1000, which is when it gets to point where I can’t make much sense of things without looking up a lot of words.

@ramsey  @derickr Non native speaker (German by birth) here, but Erewhon (1872) had a suprising lot of unknown words / idioms for me ...

@xris @derickr That’s the real problem. I have a degree in English Literature, so I’m more familiar probably than most English speakers with the idioms and spelling differences of the past. If you have a passing knowledge of those things, you can get by reading pretty far back.

@ramsey @xris That, and it gets more Germanic (i.e., closer to Dutch) too.
