Since my last years resolutions went so well (I could tick off one out of eight...), here are my New Years resolutions 2026:
- #triathlon: train accordingly to finish #AlpeDHuez triathlon
- #LRC radio operator exam: learn for and pass the exam, ideally in the first quarter of the year
- #sailing: this is twofold: 1. Swiss lakes sailing and promote the sailing community, 2. buying a ocean going boat if there is a good opportunity, in preparation for taking early retirement
- #downsizing: also, in preparation for taking early retirement
- #freediving course: get my shit together and convince my brain I'm not going to die by breathholding for 45s
- learning #English / #French: study diligently for 15 min daily
It only just occurred to me that the English and French words garage come from the French verb garer which also gives us the French word "gare" for train station (as in La Gare du Nord).
I have been staring at these words all my life. I have no idea why this decided to click tonight. (Except that I was thinking about the Italian word parcheggio.)
i've made 45 bilingual (eng/esp) copies of the Riot Medicine Field Guide, a concise companion book to the Hakan Geijer's robust protest medic text. i printed these specifically to distribute to action medics, though the content is informative for anyone and functions as a good hook for anyone interested learning more about street medicine.
if you would like one for yourself or as gift to someone ('tis the season!), please email me the address at <fallrise@riseup.net> and i will send one -- i am happy to cover the ~$4 shipping, but am willing to accept donations. if you have a medic crew and would like some for yourselves or for trainings, i can send you a box.

Discussing the language of politics
I don't understand the word "entitled".
If you're entitled to something, it means that you have a right to get it.
But if someone is being entitled, that's someone who demands things they have no right to.
I could totally understand if it was just a funny language quirk that causes these two phrases to have unrelated meaning. Language isn't logical, after all.
But people do deliberately use the double connotations of the word to subtly influence their audience's perception.
If I'm legally entitled to social security payments, that doesn't mean that I'm being an annoying brat for demanding it. But politicians keep using the word 'entitlements' instead of 'rights' when they want to instill their audience with a sense of frustration and injustice against the some rights' recipients.

To the delight of any journalist who has to cover Silicon Valley, "roadmap" is approaching "road map" in popular usage. (Historically, English coins new terms by squishing two commonly paired words together, e.g. "backyard.") https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%205-y&geo=US&q=road%20map,roadmap&hl=en

#English native speakers: how is 42km/h a "strong breeze" and not some kind of "wind"? Or is it a mistranslation from #Norweigian / #norsk ?
The word for "more secure" is "securer", right?
More and more of Japan’s universities are moving toward teaching in English for all students in a bid to bring an international environment onto their campuses. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2025/11/03/japan/more-japanese-universities-pushing-english-classes/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #japan #universities #universityoftokyo #wasedauniversity #sophiauniversity #english #education
"delight"<-- de- + light <--This particular "light" comes from
"delite" (ME) <-- delit & delitier ( #OldFrench) <-- dēlectāre ( #Latin) <-- de- + laciō (Lat), in which "lacio" <-- *lakjō ( #ProtoItalic), meaning "to allure."
At some point, the spelling of "light" ("light") influenced the spelling of "delite," making the #English word seem to share the same origins.
But where the root of "light" means "to shine," the root of "lite" in "delight" means "to entice."
