Realised my Android phone is never going to update further than version 15 so considering installing @LineageOS so I can get Android 16 and future updates, but AT WHAT COST?!

(I'm worried I will brick my phone) 馃П

@matt @LineageOS the risk of bricking is widely overestimated. And the gain in security also. LineageOS disables some android security mechanisms. And LineageOS can't update the proprietary components that are still running under the hood.

And you will lose compatibility with some apps. Apps you wouldn't expect to be that picky. Like McDonald's.

@Kurt This sounds like a firm recommendation against the change?

@matt the change was worth it for me. But for completely different reasons.
1) I use LineageOS to get rid of Google play services and other spyware. That further reduces app compatibility but is worth it for data privacy.
2) I got in contact with interesting people from modder community.

@matt @LineageOS I have custom ROM'ed 3 phones without issues, just follow the instructions to the letter. What you lose is all the apps that depend on Google Play Services or HW attestation. That means Bank apps, and things like whatsapp could take ages to show messages.

@mdione "whatsapp could take ages to show messages"

Is that a thing? I never had this on iOS, but after switching to Android, my messages on Signal take ages to show me notifications.

Sometimes, even running the stock OS for the device, I get a notification of 6 new messages from "20 mins ago" or more.

Do you know why this would happen?

I hereby introduced a new law where all phone manufacturers are forced to update the phone to @LineageOS (or OS of a similar nature) one year after they've stopped supporting the phone themselves. Starting now, with my phone.
