I learned from #FSFE (https://fsfe.org/activities/android/liberate.en.html#OS) that #LineageOS and #GrapheneOS are Libre and Ethical replacement to Android. However recently I found that #GNU (https://www.gnu.org/distros/common-distros.html) recognize them as non endorsable! Any idea about this discrepancy?

RE: https://mastodon.social/@nixCraft/115694649965814832

I wish there was an app for removing Google's AI from my Android phone, though. 😒 Yes I know you're supposed to remove it via some cautiously buried system settings, but who has the patience to practice those magic spells?

@Lambo You wish an app to solve issues with apps from Google awesome
How about a #de-googled OS? #e_OS #lineageos #grapheneos
Yes, I know, not a single button click, yet there are a few devices with preinstalled versions, #fairphone ...
And there are certainly ways and guides on #sustainable and #sovereign applications of #AI ?

I'm setting up a new phone today (still a #Fairphone3, just a less broken one...) using #lineageOS for the first time, and I'm curious to see how far I can get without using #GooglePlay...

#fdroid delivering so far...

LineageOS for microG
https://lineage.microg.org/

The naming is misleading: The images provided by this project include microG preinstalled.

microG as a replacement for the Google Services is probably not perfect, but at least among the apps I downloaded from the Play Store with Aurora, I didn't find any that doesn't work with it.

(AFAIU, paid apps are not supported by Aurora.)

Good morning Fedi friends!

I set up my alarm at 6:20am - as usual - to have at least an hour to myself before the little one wakes up. Yes, even on a Sunday.

I looked up videos about how to flash LineageOS on my Nexus 7 (2012)... And discovered a charming tutorial about TWRP recovery loader... done by a kid - I'm guessing in his early teens - some 8 years ago. The kids are alright!

If my little one started making videos about jailbreaking devices / installing custom ROMs 10 years from now, I would be so proud ☺️

Anyway, wishing you all a great day!

A comparison of #LineageOS, #eOS, and #GrapheneOS by someone who's used all three.

https://kevinboone.me/lineage-eos-graphene.html

'Using any replacement firmware will be inconvenient if you’re tied to Google’s services, as many of us are. You can try to continue to use those services, but in a less privacy-crushing way, and Graphene and ∕e∕OS purport to offer some help with that. However, I think you’d need to be both knowledgeable and careful to use Google Services, even in these restrictive environments, without inadvertently sacrificing privacy. To my mind, if you want to de-Google, you have to find replacements for Google, not ways to appease Google.'

Gave up trying to get the #LineageOS update to work, so now reinstalling everything on my phone (exactly the thing I wanted to do the day before a trip).

Good news: #Signal's backup thing works (the old one, I haven't tried the hosted one yet).

Better news: I could remember my PIN!

Slightly bad news: When I did the backups, it gave me recovery codes. When I did the restore, it asked for a passphrase. Apparently, these are the same thing (or, at least, the codes worked in the passphrase box), but it was pretty poor UI to ask me for a thing I had, but was given under a different name.

Oh, joy. Upgrading #LineageOS on my phone failed, and now I can't find a way of either rolling back to an older version or completing the upgrade. And everything I've tried so far has made it worse...

Can I get #WayDroid ( #Android #LineageOS) to use my phone number somehow for calls and everything? Is there a service for this?

Do you use your #Linux / #Fedora laptop for #telephony?

When not using Google Play services (e.g. #GrapheneOS, #LineageOS users), #Signal can be a real battery drain. @mollyim with @unifiedpush on the other hand is extremely battery efficient.

Here's how to set this up, using #Nextcloud as the UnifiedPush provider: https://kroon.email/site/en/posts/molly-unifiedpush

Some big news regarding mobile OSes:

First, Graphene OS has confirmed a partnership with a large OEM to bring support to non-Pixel devices (Snapdragon SoC):

https://piunikaweb.com/2025/10/13/grapheneos-ending-pixel-exclusivity-new-oem/

This is good news, but IMHO it only delays the unavoidable demise of free AOSP-based projects since Google is now finally pulling the rug.

Second, the FSF announced Librephone, an initiative to bring real freedom to mobile devices:

https://www.fsf.org/news/librephone-project

This is also good, but it must be taken in the right perspective: Librephone, as far as I understand it, is not a new mobile OS, but rather an initiative to open-source existing proprietary firmware blobs. AOSP-based open source OSes like Lineage, Graphene, and even /e/OS, will hopefully benefit from this initiative, by being able to replace binary blobs with open-source firmware. But they still remain AOSP-based solutions, and therefore bound to the Google ecosystem.

There are two problems here that really need to be addressed.

The first one is political. Legislators and citizens must come to acknowledge that a democratic society where the full mobile ecosystem is in the hands of a corporate duopoly is not acceptable.

The second one is technological: AOSP is not a fully free OS, it's a trojan horse, a trap set by Google years ago that is springing right now. We need to move away from Android and embrace full GNU/Linux solutions, or even something completely new, at this point I don't even care. I've heard good opinions of Postmarket OS. Any feedbacks here?

Say what you want about Richard Stallman, but he saw this coming.
