Hi, Fediverse hivemind! I'm seeking recommendations for an e-ink ereader other than a Kindle.

I need a lightweight waterproof e-ink device that I can load with epubs. In a perfect world, it would support kindle, kobo & bookshop.org apps for direct reading of my existing library. (I use but don't love Calibre)

Anyone have an eink ereader they love?
Kobo? Pocketbook? Boox? Bigme? Does it support multiple sources of books? Am I dreaming?

Boosts welcomed.

@kmherkes Boox, absolutely. They all run Android these days so you can load up with the Kindle/Kobo apps, use the built-in epub reader, or install a third party reader of your choice. The Plalma is large-smartphone sized, and from there they scale up to about 13".

@cstross

The "just load up the apps" feature is 100% why I'm looking at those. They perform well for you in terms of battery life & waterproof-ness?

@kmherkes The problem with a Boox running Android is that Android doesn't give it the battery life of a pure e-reader, it gives it the battery life of an Android (with e-ink). So 12-18 hours? As for waterproofing, it's phone/tablet grade: as long as you don't drop it in the bath you'll probably be okay.

@cstross

I've been looking at them for a long time now (I have a Kindle), but the sizes they offer are awful.

I hate, hate, HATE the oversized cell phones anyway, and I just wish they had something that's decently pocketbook size. For that money, I think I can desire that much. (They had one, but discontinued it.)
