I understand where they are coming from but that is way too much of a technological framing. Even an encrypted open source Internet can be super unsafe to exist in.

Safety comes from social and political structures and decisions that technology can support.

@tante HMM the dark web fits every criteria on the left. Where does sex trafficking happen, again?

@tante yes. This is not chicken and egg.

Just as #democracy precipitates #revolution, the systems bounding #technology must allow for #freedom by being open.

And that freedom comes with responsibility.

And that responsibility is something #techbros have shirked by moving goalposts of how much freedom users have while extracting from users. They do this because they can buy influence in a nation where #freespeech is measured in dollars.

The fediverse is an isle of coherence.

@tante it is marketing, unfortunately people searching for google alternatives most of the time do not know what open source means, what it entitles and that it comes with security concerns.

@tante I was thinking exactly this yesterday. The information that US govt has available through GAFAM was largely harmless 6 months ago but now puts many people at risk.

The internet hasn’t changed, the tech hasn’t changed, even the legislation is the same.

And yet the likely usage and weaponisation against minorities and political opponents is what’s significant.

I have no doubt that eventually we’ll find out exactly what Palantir and friends are doing and im sure it won’t be pretty.
