Billionaires are worried about the Greta Thunberg type of protesting, which, on the ground, is a modest movement. But it's subversive, it tries to cause crisis. it's a type of protest that topples power structures.

Notice how billionaires never seem to worry about branded activism like #NoKings. It's because those types of protests don't apply pressure to those who wield power.

It's shows up and it leaves quietly.

Peter Thiel warns the Antichrist and apocalypse are linked to the ‘end of modernity’ currently happening—and cites Greta Thunberg as a driving example | Fortune

The Gen Z Swedish climate activist is a legionnaire of the Antichrist, Thiel claims, a “Luddite” who wants to halt technological progress in its tracks.

@fromjason How is Thunberg's protest different from No Kings. Is there anything where I can reas up on that?

@jfml The difference direct action. I would read up on what Minnesota is doing tactically: https://archive.ph/RvWpI

Marches can be useful if it's an active part of something bigger. No Kings is not actively part of anything. The gathering is the protest. And that is ineffective.

@fromjason what about the 3.5% rule?

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20190513-it-only-takes-35-of-people-to-change-the-world

That suggests we need about 10,000,000 people to join a day of no kings protests in the US for real change to happen.

The '3.5% rule': How a small minority can change the world

Nonviolent protests are twice as likely to succeed as armed conflicts – and those engaging a threshold of 3.5% of the population have never failed to bring about change.

@kryten

> In 2003, the people of Georgia ousted Eduard Shevardnadze through the bloodless Rose Revolution, in which protestors stormed the parliament building holding the flowers in their hands.

This is direct action.

We can talk about the percentage of people it takes to participate in direct action, that's all good and well. But 3.5% of people multiplied by nothing is still nothing.

@fromjason Excellent take. Greta forced the navies of 3 countries to mobilize and protect her fleet. People should learn from her and try to always think what's effective, that is if they truly want change.

#NoKings uses "non-violence" to mean non-disruptive. But that's not how Dr. King used the term.

"Non-violence" in the Civil Rights era dictates we not retaliate violently after we disrupt the status quo. It's sitting in a "whites only" diner, disciplined not to react when coffee is thrown in our face.

No Kings has no equivalent to sitting in a whites only diner. Instead, it dictates that we stand outside with a sign demanding the things we aren't willing to take.

@fromjason The "No Kings" style of protest isn't about disrupting; it's about networking. (...to oversimplify a bit.)

...and wow, I still can't decide if Thiel is honestly delusional or understands very well the manipulative BS he is spewing.

@woozle I've heard the networking framing a few times. I can buy that for sure. Networking is important. Building contacts is important.

But that's not what No Kings is advertising. I've never heard them even mention it. In fact, the only networking it encourages is giving them your contact info so they can market to us.

So it seems a bit like painting a bulls eye around the arrow.

@fromjason PR and real goals are often serving two different ends; just at a glance, it seems obvious to me that the PR would aim for something more inspiring than "find your network of co-conspirators!" -- and of course a lot of the motivation even for the organizers may have been emotional rather than calculated.

Regardless of intent, though, they are still useful for that purpose, as well as helping morale.

(FWIW, I haven't attended any rallies, though I think it's great that so many people did.)
