Every time I watch Stephen Colbert, I think of May 21, 2026, where his last show airs from The Ed Sullivan Theater in NY.

It ends, not because he has bad ratings, but — I believe — because CBS does not have the courage to continue to speak truth to power.

I hope with all my heart, that Stephen Colbert finds a different path, where he can continue informing the public in the unique and entertaining way he masters so well.

In this decisive moment in history, we need all hands on deck.

@randahl Colbert signed a $13 million deal with YouTube the very next day he was canceled.

@randahl he did the show at his house during the pandemic pretty by himself. He built the set, filmed it, did a little of the pre-editing. And they say that if he were an independent podcaster he'd have the highest following of any of them out there. So, I think he'll end up going rouge and doing his own thing. The pandemic proved he could.

@randahl Honestly this the future. The networks can use the time for something that costs less to produce or generates more revenue and Colbert is set free to do whatever he wants to. They didn't ding his fame nor did they silence him.

I'm a regular viewer of Colbert. I'm angry about the cancellation of his show. But in recent episodes, I've seen him laugh about it. Of course he would make light of it, that's his style. But I also think he's gloating because he already has a new and better gig lined up.

I want him.to take them on directly, not as entertainment. If Colbert runs for President, if he is asked by enough people to run, I would support.

No.idea what that badiclly decent kind man is doing next, but I can't wait.

Colbert wasn't fired, he was ignited.

I like what he says but it’s 2 minutes of interview and 5 minutes of ads.

I hope he can do a proper interview project somewhere.

@randahl i wonder whether he's considered political office (senator from S.C.? POTUS?). A comedian becoming President can't be worse than it's been with a slimy daytime reality show host doing it.

@randahl You are preaching to the choir here! Even though Jon Stewart's monologue is relegated to once a week, I listen to both. Colbert and Stewart are the one-two punch of comedic, political commentary offering Trumpian knock-outs with every show. These guys keep me balanced and sane.

@randahl

It may have been humility but I saw an interview with him recently where he was contrasting himself with Jon Stewart. He felt Jon was naturally politically savvy but he wasn't. His said his writers make him look smart.

So hopefully his writers, who will also be out of work, will choose to continue to fight authoritarianism with comedy along with Stephen.

I really hope whatever it is, part is a monologue. They lift my spirits.

@ Randahl Fink If I were him, I'd probably leave the US and go back to Britain.

Not safe to live in a country that's rapidly sliding into fascism, especially if you're a foreigner who has a history of mocking government and exposing injustice.

@randahl

It will likely be for the better as the show is a tremendous undertaking and can be done for a fraction of the cost independently. Letterman retired in '16 and Colbert took over with the ability to get independent voices out via social media not as easy as it is now.

Network TV and its decades old affiliate system is dying and the same person buys up all of the affiliates in the small markets as it is.
