The build is successful!

I finally finished* my TagTuner music jukebox and hooked it up to some speakers. It uses the ESPHome-based Home Assistant Voice PE as its brains and audio player, and when it scans NFC tags, it fetches corresponding media from my Music Assistant server.

I still have a couple bugs to work out, but this is definitely close enough to feel "ready".

I'm so happy to have a tool that will let us both (a) leverage my large home media server and (b) enjoy some of the benefits of physical media.

To say more on point (b): I enjoy running my own music-streaming server with Navidrome, and I have a not-small library of music, but I'm not happy with many of the wrinkles such a collection introduces. My brain forms media habits really quickly, so if I'm not routinely exposed to different musical options, which is hard to do on a small device that is often sorted alphabetically, I will play the same few songs and albums over and over again, despite wanting to broaden my horizons. I also want all of us on my family, including my young child, to be able to browse and select music without staring at a screen.

Because this uses Music Assistant, I can still browse the full library on a device when I'm feeling up for it. But this also allows a more curated, lower-tech method of interaction that matters a lot to me.

Build note: I was having trouble getting the "records" to scan when in the upright orientation pictured, so I opened the case and removed most of a pedestal in the base, allowing the discs to descend further when placed in that position. Now we're golden.

Well, other than the screw holes that are now slightly stripped. 3D-printed PLA really doesn't want to have things screwed into and out of it multiple times. 🙃
