I did the migration today during my lunch. It’s true, it was practically seamless and everything is now back to how it was (or better!). The only things that weren’t 100% automagic were containers I was running on the same machine: an MQTT server and Homebridge for some devices that were previously pulled in via HomeKit.
For MQTT, I installed the add-on and then was prompted to reauth which worked perfectly. So no issues there.
For Homebridge, I actually replaced it with a Starling Home Hub I’ve had for a while. I was using it for Nest devices; it supports local video streams and more entities like the Nest Protect motion sensors, and exposes that all over HomeKit. Since they added broad Google Home to HomeKit bridging, I can just use the couple of other couple of devices via it as well.
Does anyone in my circles have experience migrating a Home Assistant install*? I have backups and nothing is mission critical if I had to redo it, but it would be annoying to have to set things like automations and dashboards back up. But those *should* be safe with my multiple backups in different locations…
I'm just wondering what I should look out for. I'm nervous lol
*I’m specifically going from a container on Ubuntu to Home Assistant OS on the same hardware, with MQTT

What the fuck is this, @homeassistant

Now every time someone rings your doorbell, you can receive a notification with a cartoon version of the doorbell snapshot"
Gross.

Hmm, apparently Plex finally released an official API for PMS (the media Server). Wonder if this will help with #HomeAssistant. I'm not the best at coding, but I do see a search API endpoint. Unfortunately it doesn't look very useful if you can' control a player...

I want to use presence detection in Home Assistant automations. I'm using the companion app on Android. My Home Assistant installation is accessible from both external and internal URL.
I would have thought that configuring either external and internal URLs, or home network SSID, should be enough to allow Home Assistant to tell if my phone is home or not, but the app seems to want full location access to work properly.
I don't care if Home Assistant keeps a record of where I am (or rather, I would prefer if it didn't), I just want it to know if I'm home or not.
Any ideas?

I genuinely wonder how far we can get if we make a concerted effort to move away from the Rent-Seeker Economy (aka “SaaS”).
Like just whittling away at it and see if we can Shawshank our way out
@zkat I love seeing the success of #homeassistant in that regard. Just one nieche, but it's something. I think they are getting relevant enough that there is a growing market of local-only, privacy first devices without the need of any cloud/subscription at all.
