@laryllan @cassidy Not much to say - #homeassistant voice keeps evolving from a RPi to an ESP32, and now a cheap FOSS device with a decent DAC and on-chip activity detection and processing.
https://www.home-assistant.io/voice-pe/

The protocol was Wyoming, but this evolved to #LinuxVoiceAssistant as part of #ESPhome (and can run on RPi now).

The back-end can be anonymised cloud (like #Mycroft was) or fully local of you reduce the models or have a big GPU (trades accuracy Vs silicon).

Let’s say I have a Mycroft Mark I that I pulled out of a closet in 2026. What can I do with it? 🤔

(I also have a Home Assistant server and a couple of Home Assistant Voice Preview Editions…)

@cassidy When #Mycroft the company died, the cloud servers needed for the STT and TTS died too.

There's a RPi inside which *might* be enough to run the older #HomeAssistant #WyomingSatellite or the current #LinuxVoiceAssistant.

Pull the uSD card, install #RPiOS (no desktop), and see if the Python will run.

Getting the LED array and buttons working will take more work... unless someone else has adapted a #MarkOne

(mine is back in the box!)

"Hey Mycroft, what are beans?" "Oh, no you don't. I'm not giving you the satisfaction of yelling at a computer to shut up about beans. Not today."

Over the summer our 6 year old asked me to read to him from The Official Ubuntu Book (which I co-authored). On the page about the #Mycroft assistant device, I mentioned I had one. He was entranced.

Well, yes, I do. A Mark 1. It's been in my closet since I got it. It might be too old to run #OVOS. Or the hardware is dodgy. Maybe I should consider #HiveMind 🤔 Hey, someone upgraded it to use a RPi4.

What kind of hole am I digging for myself here?

My eyes are so itchy and watery (presumably due to seasonal allergies) that I haven't been able to get much work done in the past few days. I'm writing this toot with my eyes closed most of the time. 😑

Dear #accessibility hivemind, is there an easy way to have #Orca working with a natural-sounding text-to-speech voice, that is not eSpeak, but rather something like #MyCroft's Mimic3 ?

What's the state of the art for screenreader TTS voices on #Linux and how do I get it in #Fedora?
