Does anyone know what the significance is by "low" and "medium" federation capacity for https://masto.host/pricing ? What does it mean in practice? How does it affect the experience? #mastohost

Also: tips/recommendations for other managed #Mastodon hosting are welcome.

@luftvaffel @leanderlindahl Hmm, its all about how many sites you're connected to and how much data you're pulling from them to your server. It's kinda hard to put numbers on, so I understand why MastoHost has chosen that wording.

I wouldn't worry too much about it because if you are over the plan limits, you don't lose service. You just get an email from MastoHost to tell you that you are over the limit and then the next billing cycle you are upgraded to the next plan if that suits.

@luftvaffel @leanderlindahl That said, also check out FediHost because they have competitive plans on Mastodon hosting.

https://fedihost.co

MastoHost are more EU-based, FediHost are Canada-based. Both have excellent customer service, from my experience.

@luftvaffel @leanderlindahl At the minute, oslo.town only has 2500 accounts and about 200 active users, but our federation is SUPER HIGH so our costs are through the roof right now relative to our active user numbers :cry_telegram:

@luftvaffel I think its a mix of things;

- We store 5+ years of oslo.town content

- We have a relay which fetches posts from other Scandinavian instances automatically

- Myself + @themayor both follow a bunch of "interesting" accounts just so those posts are pulled in

- We store all posts for 365 days (except media, which is 7 days).

I think I should maybe tweak some settings. Hard to balance what's going to make a good service vs storage costs.
