I started watching the new #StarTrek show #StarFleetAcademy . We are quite proficient in English, but both my wife and me found it really hard to follow the dialogues. Not sure if this is a production issue or if young actors simply don't have the same quality of speech training than they used to, but it really bothers me.
Any thoughts on that?

@matthegap these days I watch everything with subtitles or I'd miss most of the dialog. I frequently notice words that were mumbled or almost completely inaudible. The fact that stuff gets released this way might mean the director intended it that way, or that the sound editors are doing a poor job. Hard to know which.

Same.

... or, if you're middle aged or older like me, that you're starting to lose the higher frequencies of your hearing range, which makes it harder to hear consonants clearly, and makes normal speech sound like mumbling ; )

Could your hearing be getting an assist from your memory of previous watches though? Worth considering. Everyone in the early stages of hearing decline goes through a stage of assuming everyone is mumbling ; )
