"In the 90s we had the mahogany boom ... and you almost can't find a mahogany tree in the [Amazon] jungle anymore. And if you want to talk about carbon sequestration in the rainforest, the ancient hardwoods hold like 60% of the carbon of the whole rainforest."

#PaulRosolie, 2023

In Aotearoa that's kauri, rimu, totara and kahikatea.

If you know someone who thinks tribes living close to nature are not modern humans, or that they're always peaceful unless attacked, this conversation with Amazon conservationist Paul Rosolie is the podcast for them;

https://lexfridman.com/paul-rosolie/

He talks about how thanks to the behaviour of rubber extractors in the Amazon in the early years of industrialisation, uncontacted tribes will kill outsiders on sight and rip them to pieces.

Maybe warn then about the Jordan Peterson waffle, and the collegial references to Melon Husk. But this is a 3 1/2 hour conversation, most of which is focused on Rosolie's life in the Amazon and his conservation work there, much of it riveting.

EDIT: Maybe warn them also about the and the doublethink on climate change; we are in an environmental crisis but Peterson is right that climate activism is "alarmist" 🤦‍♂️

@strypey I like the way Lex is always respectful. Even to complete idiots.

He has some very good guests, and some complete kooks

This is one reason among many for why Native Forest Action opposed Timberlands' selective logging on Te Tai Poutini (West Coast) of Te Wai Pounamu (South Island of Aotearoa). Removing all the giant hardwoods has all sorts of detrimental effects on the rest of the forest. Starting with the huge area that's clearfelled around the footprint of the trees they want to take.
